Where to stay outside Munich?

We are planning to be in Munich for approx. 5 days/nights in May 2008. Our itinerary includes seeing Daschow, Fussen (castles), possibly some hiking and finally Eagles Nest.

Is there a nice town/hotel outside of Munich that will give us access to the city and easy access to all these other sites?

Or do you suggest staying in Munich?? We will have a rental car.

Your help is most appreciated!!

Daschow?

Do you mean Dachau concentration camp memorial site?

You could stay in Dachau itself. Quite a nice town.

From Dachau you could use regional trains or S-Bahn trains to Munich. A mini group (2-5 persons) day ticket for public transport is EUR 11,80. Travel time to Marienplatz, the centre of Munich%26#39;s old city is 23 minutes.

%26gt; We will have a rental car.

I would not recommend to use a car for getting into Munich. Public transport will be less than parking fees. Also faster.

Munich Airport to Munich or Dachau can also be done easily by public transport.

I would only recommend the car for your loop through the Bavarian Alps.

Apologies for the misspell! (I hate that!)

Thanks for the tip on the car....that%26#39;s why I don%26#39;t really want to stay in the city...parking is limited and expensive. Thanks.

If you want to stay in the mountains, the area around Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald is fairly centrally located for what you want to visit, and would give you lots of hiking opportunities.

If you want to visit Eagles Nest you must stay at the historic %26quot;Zum Turken Hotel%26quot;.

There you have access to all of the underground bunkers. This historic (formally SS hotel) is not to be missed. The proprietor, Ingrid Schafenberg is the daughter of the owner and was there herself during those days. At 76, she is a living history museum herself. She also made us the best breakfast including bacon and eggs!!! I would recommend two days there as there are hiking trails all around Berchesgarden and Obersalzberg.

I would recommend Hotel Hof Lamier in Munich (actually out at the Charlottsberg Palace area). Sebastian, his wife Alexandra and sister Julie are the best hosts of the Munich area.
