Berlin Döner kebab

Where can you get good, cheap D?ner kebabs in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin? We%26#39;ll be staying in the Alcatraz hostel at the end of February. Thanks! RT

All over the place. There are a number of D?nerbuden on Danziger Strasse, around the corner from your hostel. If you jump on the M1 tram, there%26#39;s a good one at Rosenthaler Platz, 4 stops away. The best ones in Berlin, of course, are to be found in the Turkish immigrant districts in Kreuzberg, such as Kottbusser Tor. Here%26#39;s an article about the Bistro Bagdad, a classic d?ner snackbar at Schlesisches Tor, where we used to sometimes go late at night before the fall of the Wall: iht.com/articles/2006/09/17/news/city12.php

Prenzlauer Berg is not really the place to get authentic good Doener.

In Rosenthaler Platz, there are several places offering Doener and some of them are plain scary (disgusting). There is one Gyros place on the Platz which is great, and there is one in the corner of Bernauer Strasse and Torstrasse, which is good.

However, as mentioned before, the best places to eat Doener are in Kreuzberg. My favourite: Didim grill, which has several branches, one in Kotbusser Tor (near the U station), and another one on the corner of Erkstrasse and Sonnenallee in Neokoelln.

Another good Doener place, well known and a bit expensive for Doener, is Hasir, a restaurant which has several branches all over town, including in Kotbusser Tor (www.hasir.de).

I dunno, Lylou. what do you find so disgusting about the D?ner place at Rosenthaler Platz? I%26#39;m no D?ner connoisseur but I%26#39;ve picked one up occasionally (since I live more or less up the street) and I find them OK. I%26#39;m talking about the one with the restaurant at the corner of Torstr. underneath the fitness centre, not one of the Flachbau things across from the tram stop. Nice freshly cut vegetables and the meat is the usual.

|||

Yes, the one on the corner of Bernauer and Torstrasse is not bad. But there is the one that is on Kastanienallee, on a trailer, and I have seen rats running there.

Now, I know that there are problems in all kinds of restaurants that I don%26#39;t want to know about (friends of mine who wait in restaurant always tell me that later they%26#39;ll never eat there), but rats (huge ones, probably could be source for Doener meat) is for me a HUGE turn off.

|||

[OFF TOPIC] You oughta see the rats around the food stands in the back sois (lanes) in Bangkok where I am right now. In the northeast of Thailand, they harvest the rats out of the rice fields and sell them roasted on a spit (tail and all). it%26#39;s a big delicacy and people come from far away to get them. But I don%26#39;t think anyone makes d?ner meat out of them...[END OF OFF TOPIC]

If you mean the flat, temporary stands on Weinbergstrasse across from the tram stop at R-Platz, I agree they%26#39;re an eyesore. Around 10 years ago they demolished a building on that corner and have never done anything to replace it.

|||

Oh no! I got a Doner Kebab from one of those vans at R-Platz because it was cold and I couldn%26#39;t be bothered walking to the other place under that gym (which I agree, it is excellent). I think most of their patrons are lazy people from Circus Hostel who can%26#39;t be bothered crossing the street to the other places (like me). Well it tasted Ok, I didn%26#39;t see any rats and I%26#39;m still alive (perhaps the alcohol from a belly full of Weiss beer before the kebab may have killed the parasites on the kebab!)

[More OFF TOPIC]

This reminds me of a trip to Georgia (don%26#39;t even ask!). The hosts offer lots of Vodka and you%26#39;re supposed to drink to be polite (or to forget where you%26#39;re in); one of us didn%26#39;t want to drink and obviously, he fell ***really*** sick. Luckily for him, we were already in Turkey, which is sort of civilisation, for the treatment.

Hi,

for the best Doener in Prenzlauer Berg you have to go to Cem%26#39;s Grill in Danziger Str. / Schliemannstr... (right at the corner). Their Doener costs 2,30 and is just excellent... just as good as any Doener you get in Kreuzberg.

:-)
