My husband and I are flying to Frankfurt from Calgary in Sept. We are renting a car and driving to a place near the Swiss German border, called Hasel. I know this is in or near the Black Forest.I know this is near a town called Wehr and 30 minutes from Basel. We are going for a wedding. We have 2 weeks to visit as much of Germany as we can. I also have an aunt that lives in Idar Oberstein and friends that live 30 minutes from there. We would also like to go to Switzerland and possibly do some wine tours in Germany. It is my husbands wish to see some castles as well. I wonder if we can do most of these. We need to be at the wedding by the 20th so we thought we would take the car from Frankfurt direct to Hasel, spend the 2 or 3 wedding days needed there and then we are free to sightsee. Since we are returning to Frankfurt, we thought Idar Oberstein would make the most sense on the return trip. How busy are the Autobahns? We are coming in during the day and figure a 3 hour trip to Wehr. Any suggestions anyone has as to our sightseeing wishes will be so appreciated.

You might like to have a look at www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de for castles, palaces, monasteries, and gardens operated by the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg where you are going (BW-tourism is www.tourismus-bw.de). It%26#39;s an excellent website, just click on the English option, and there are several excellent places to visit in that area and history and anecdotes about the places also on the website.
Burg Hohenzollern is an excellent fairytale-like castle, and probably one of the most important in Germany as it was the family seat of the influential Hohenzollern family, www.burg-hohenzollern.com . Schloss Lichtenstein just east of Reutlingen is another excellent fairytale-like castle to visit (www.schloss-lichtenstein.de). In this area is also the lovely old college town of Tuebingen with its hilly cobblestone streets (www.tuebingen.de).
A nice drive is along the Danube River between Tuttlingen and Sigmaringen as the Danube goes through its gorge in the Schwaebische Alb (www.schwaebischealb.de). It is idyllic with castles and palaces perched on the cliff tops, a nice monastery at Beuron, and a great palace at Sigmaringen (www.hohenzollern.com). From Sigmaringen, the Bodensee (Lake Constance) is a little to the south, with Meersburg being the loveliest town on the lake, and it also has Germany%26#39;s oldest castle (www.bodensee-tourismus.com). The Swiss Alps are on the other side of the lake.
If you like Baroque, Oberschwaben- Upper Swabia (www.oberschwaben-tourismus.de) is also fairly close, and there are numerous excellent Baroque palaces, churches and monasteries, and the Upper Swabian Baroque Road that goes through many of them (www.barockstrasse.org).
Just a few good suggestions for places to visit.

You can do wine tasting in the Kaiserstuhl area, e.g. the towns by Freiburg. Between the Black Forrest area and Idar-Oberstein are plenty of other excellent wine areas, like the Palatinate (Pfalz) and the Nahe river valley. From I-O. drive into the rhine river gorge for plenty of castles and do the mosel river as well (wine, picturesque towns, thousands of castles).
So if I was you I%26#39;d focus on the rhine river axes and you could get most out of your time.

Thank you so much for all of the information you both have given me. Do we need to bring coats with us for the fall? Also my husband would also like to see Munich but I believe Octoberfest is primarily in October is it not?
|||
Oktoberfest takes place end of September. For exact dates check with oktoberfest.de
Yes, you should bring your coats as it could be a rather cold fall.

For beer festivals there is also Stuttgart%26#39;s Cannstatter Volksfest 26Sept-12Oct, the world%26#39;s second largest with more rides than Munich%26#39;s, www.stuttgart-tourist.de and www.cannstatter-volksfest.de. This would not be out of your way.
