Hello there. I%26#39;m hoping some of the Munich experts could help me out. My wife and I are heading to Munich and (hopefully) Prague for a week in April (10th-16th).
We are arriving into Munich at 10am on the 10th of April. We were thinking of taking a train directly to Prague and spending a few days there and then heading back to Munich. We are also hoping take a trip to Fussen for the castles.
Is it possible to take the train to Prague from Munich and if so, what is the best way to travel to/from?
Is it possible to take a train to Fussen and see the castles or do I need a car?
Any other advice for me - places to see, go, etc.?
If I can reciprocate with info on Chicago one day, just ask. Thanks much.

DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
From: MUC airport
To: Prague
To: Freising
To: Regensburg
From: Munich
To: Hohenschwangau
1. Get some Czech Korunies from a currency exchange the airport.
2. Buy a Bayern-B?hmen-Ticket (Bavaria-Bohemia-Ticket BBT) from on of the ticket machines (EUR 32,00) or at the counter (EUR 34,00). This is a mini group day ticket covering all regional trains in Bavaria and the Bohemian border region, which means up to Plzen/Pilsen in this case.
3. Buy a second Bayern-B?hmen-Ticket for the date you want to return from Prague to Munich.
For the next good connection to Prague (arrival there at 18:45) you have a layover of 2 hours or so. I would suggest to start immediately at the airport and proceed to Freising or Regensburg to spent this time there.
4. Use the bus from the airport to Freising. It%26#39;s covered by the BBT.
5. When on the train to Prague buy from the Czech conductor (who will get on the train at Furth im Wald) tickets from Plzen/Pilsen to Prague. CZK 145,00 pp (~ EUR 5,15) plus a small service fee. That%26#39;s you need the Czech Korunies from step 1 for.
6. Buy at the counter in Prague tickets from Prague to Plzen/Pilsen on your return travel date.
7. Use the BBT from step 3 for the rest.
A good connection is
Prague dep 09:16
Munich arr 15:19
This is a direct train.
The BBT covers further more all local public transport in Munich: S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams, buses
- - -
Fssen / Neuschwanstein
Here you can use a similar ticket, the Bavaria-Ticket (EUR 27,00). Identical - just without the Bohemian part.
Bus stop next to the ticket centre for Neuschwanstein is Hohenschwangau. This bus is also covered by the BT ticket.
The BT (and also the BBT) are valid
Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day
Sa,So: from midnight till 3am next day
If you are not early at Hohenschwangau you may consider to book a castle tour for a specific time in advance. Avoiding the risk that the next x tours are all already sold out when you arrive at the ticket centre. Keep in mind that you have to collect the ordered tickets at least 1 hour before the tour starts.

Fantastic. Thanks much. At first it looks intimidating but looking again, it seems pretty easy. Thanks.

%26gt; it seems pretty easy.
... saves you also approx. EUR 150 for Munich to Prague and return.

I just looked at the train schedules and it looks like its a 6-8 hour trip via train. I%26#39;m thinking of skipping Prague and spending the whole week in Bavaria or looking at other options. I%26#39;d hate to spend two of my days traveling by train. Thanks for your assistance.

Ty,
Air Dolomiti (Lufthansa)has flights...travel time @ 1 hr.
|||
Think about flying into Munich and flying home out of Prague. That%26#39;s what I may do in May and the cost is only $20 more than if I flew in and out of the same airport. You will save a whole day on travel!!!

%26gt; Air Dolomiti (Lufthansa)has flights...travel time @ 1 hr.
City centre to city centre flying will also need approx. 4 hours.
Both airports are not that close to the city centres. This alone will cost you 1,5 - 2 hours together.

Babe,
That sounds like a plan!
Can I ask which airlines you have in mind for this open jaw?

Fares for the Lufthansa flights were over 800 USD for when I was looking (20 June). Why so expensive for a 1 hr flight? I%26#39;ll be taking the train.
Is the purpose of buying the BBT ticket + Pilsen-Prague ticket only to save money? It looks like it will cost about 40 Euros going this route as opposed to buying the ticket from the website on the above link (108 euros).
I searched munich to prague and got a train going from Munich Hbf to Prague. Is this the same train and can I do the trick of buying the BBT+Pilsen-Prague ticket for this route?
Thanks
