Hotel, Condo, or Bed and Breakfast- what is better

My family of four will be visiting Germany in the summer. We would like to stay in a condo or anything that offers a kitchen to save a few dollars. Is this a good idea? Does anyone know of any condos available?

You can certainly save a lot of money that way and have a lot more space and flexibility. The only problem you might have is that most websites are in German, unless you can understand German. The easiest solution is to go for an international rental site which has descriptions in English:

vrbo.com

ownersdirect.co.uk

seem to have good reputations, or the Home Away network. Do watch very carefully for the accommodation descriptions though: a lot of holiday apartments in Germany have some people sleeping on sofa bads in the living area and/or combined kitchen/living room/bedroom.

There are areas in Germany that have vacation villages. For Baden-Wuerttemberg in SW Germany one possibility is staying at a farm, stable, vineyard or orchard, see www.urlaub-bauernhof.de . From the BW tourist office (www.tourismus.de) you can also get information on vacation rentals. From them you can receive (probably only in German) for the first %26quot;Urlaub auf dem Bauernhof%26quot; and for the second %26quot;Gemtliche Urlaubsdomizile 2008%26quot;. You should be able to understand enough even if you don%26#39;t read German. Staying in such a place for a week is a good idea not primarily for saving on meals, but the cost of a week%26#39;s stay is probably comparable to 2 nights in a hotel. Some other interesting information on the state run castles, palaces, gardens, and monasteries in Baden-Wuerttemberg, www.schloesser-und.gaerten.de , and for two excellent fairytale-like castles www.burg-hohenzollern.com and www.schloss-lichtenstein.de .

The most popular regions for vacation dwellings in Baden-Wuerttemberg where you can find accomodation and general tourist informations are:

Black Forest www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info

Lake Constance (Bodensee) www.bodensee-tourismus.com

Swabian Alb (low limestone mountains with numerous caves and castles) www.schwaebischealb.de

You can also usually find information about anyplace by going to www.PLACENAME.de .

You can have an excellent time in any of these places, there are months%26#39; worth of fun, interesting excellent things to do in and around these places. Baden-Wuerttemberg has the most historical buildings of any German state, and almost the best restaurants with almost a third of the top ones. There are at least 24 caves, seven large amusement parks including Germany%26#39;s best Europa Park www.europapark.de , and 19 historic or museum railroads. Also ask the tourist office for a copy of %26quot;Baden-Wuerttemberg 2008 erleben%26quot; which although probably only in German is full of useful information on this German state and the many things to see and do.
