If there is only time for once castle tour, which do you recommend? Many thanks for your input!

See both if you can -- they%26#39;re amazingly different for being adjacent.
If you absolutely can%26#39;t squeeze in the other one, then I suppose I%26#39;d choose Neuschwanstein -- it%26#39;s more crowded, but it%26#39;s also a much more amazing flight of fancy than is Hohenschwangau.
we been to Neuschwanstein%26#39;s castle last year, quite enjoyed it.
(it%26#39;s not actually Neuschwanstein%26#39;s castle -- it was King Ludwig%26#39;s, and now belongs to the Bavarian Palace Department, a division of the Free State of Bavaria. Neuschwanstein is only the name of the castle, and roughly translates to New Swan Stone.)
Only one is famous, and hardly anyone would visit the other one if it wasn%26#39;t close to its famous neighbor. Visit Neuschwanstein. Although its interior isn%26#39;t that great, you would always wonder what it was like.

I sent you a message. There are lots of castles in Bavaria but the %26quot;Neuschwanstein%26quot; is the most famous, like a castle out of a fairy tale and the one from the picture postcards.
The Fact is that Neuschwanstein was only ever lived-in for about 75 days- it was a fantasy brought to life. All the %26quot;amazing%26quot; paintings were done by painters for theatrical productions... It IS absolutely amazing, but... The line-ups are nothing short of insane.
The Castle of Hohenschwangau is where the family REALLY lived, and you can see the REAL piano used by Wagner for example, as well as all the REAL family crests etc of the Bavarian nobility of that time (1860%26quot;s). So if you want a fantasy you pick the first, if you want reality you pick the other...

Thanks to everyone for all the input. Is anyone familiar with the hotels in the area? Specifically the %26quot;Be King Yourself%26quot; package through Schlosshotel Lisl?
We usually stay at the very small hotel across the road that they manage, Villa Jaegerhaus, which is excellent. Hotel Lisl%26#39;s restaurant is excellent and there is a nice view on Neuschwanstein from it, so if you room has a view of Neuschwanstein it should be fine as it is a close-up view and both palaces in Hohenscwangau are lit up most of the night.
