Bed and Breakfast on Rhine/interesting castle ruins

We are travelling March 20-24 with an 11 year old and 13 year old through the Rhine River area for four days.

Where is a good central location to stay and drive to castles along the Rhine?

What are the top five castles to visit for two teenagers that want to explore? We are thinking of Burg Klopp, Burg Rheinstien, Castle Sooneck ...

How about the cable-railway to the Rudesheim-Niederwald- Monument at this time of year?

The youth hostel in Bacharach is actually in a castle, and the hostels generally have family rooms with private bath. You might want to check directly with them to see whether they have rooms available.

Burg Rheinstein and Burg Reichenstein are ok, Burg Sooneck is a really interesting castle with a great interior. Guarded tours through the castle are a %26quot;must%26quot;.

Burg Klopp is nice to see, but it s only the seat of the city gouvernment and not free to enter.

Other great locations are Oberwesel and the city of Bacharach. For fans of great medieval castles you must make a trip to St. Goar and castle Rheinfels. It s the greatest castle at the river rhine and the ruins are really great till today.

A really great location to stay is Bacharach. It s 40 km to Koblenz and about 40 to Mainz so you re in the middle of the UNESCO heritage.

Greets from Germany,

Christian

I stayed in the youth hostels in St Goar (lovely views of the river), Bacharach (a castle) and Koblenz (a fortress) as well an guest houses in Bingen and Oberwesel all are beautiful and a car really is not necessary to get around, the trains are so reliable and regular as are the boats this is a much more pleasant and interesting way to get about. Cable car is a nice way to spend a day but Rudesheim is a bit touristy.

B and B Bei Alex in St. Goar is family-friendly and has a view of the castle ruins. Bring a flashlight to explore the tunnels in the ruins.

Your kids would enjoy the tour through the enormous Marksburg castle, across from Koblenz in Braubach on the Rhine. The interiors are in the stark, medieval tradition, not prettified, and the views of the Rhine are fantastic. It%26#39;s easy to imagine medieval life in the castle, as it is one of the best preserved on the Rhine.

We (husban, 11 year old son, and I) drove the Rhine castle route in one rainy autumn day, and had a great time. I%26#39;d recommend at at least two days %26quot;in season%26quot;. Any more than that, and our son might have had his fill.

Rheinstein was hauntingly beautiful. But be sure to get to two Burgs that are not ruined: Marsburg and Eltz. These will help your sons see what the ruins they are visiting looked and felt like when more intact. Makes it a bit more real.

Our 11-year old son loved Marksburg--he still talks about it. This burg never fell to invasion, and escaped the 19th century romantic %26quot;redos%26quot;; so it%26#39;s like stepping back to the 14th-15th century. Very low-key tour--not touristy at all.

We were unable to to get to Burg Eltz because it was closed during our autumn visit; however, it is supposed to be amazing. The same family has owned it from the start--some 33+generations--and are still in residence. It%26#39;s a little drive off the Rhine, but it sounds worth it. Living history.

We found the Steve Rick%26#39;s Germany website (and book) to be invaluable. It struck just the right tone for traveling with our son. Both have sample itineraries/direction for the Rhine castles and Burg Eltz, along with some written tours of the castles (including directions of going through the tunnels mentioned by another poster). There is also good advice on hotels (a couple in castles) along the Rhine. Google Steve Rick%26#39;s Germany and you%26#39;ll get there.

Have fun!
