Dusseldorf or Cologne for 1 day?

We%26#39;re leaving in 2 weeks and flying in and out of Dusseldorf airport. While most of our time will be spent in Belgium (Brugge) and Amsterdam, we have 1 day in Dusseldorf before our plane flies out. We%26#39;ll be travelling with 2 boys (age 10 and 9), and wondered if it would be best to take the train to Cologne to visit the catherdral and tour the old town in Cologne, or head to the old town of Dusseldorf.

We%26#39;re staying mid-way between DUS airport and central Dusseldorf (near Derendorf station), but I understand train travel is fairly easy to either place from there.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks

My vote goes to Cologne. The Dom is really something and the Rhine is beautiful. It%26#39;s definately worth the 30 minute train ride.

I would actually suggest you do both. You can check out the Dusseldorf Altstadt for a couple of hours and head over to Cologne or vice versa. And yes train travel is simple and easy. The German Train system is the best and there is plenty of information available.

Enjoy your trip and be sure to let us know how it went.

Thanks so much to both of you for the quick response. I think we%26#39;re definitely going to try to make it to Cologne, and I appreciate the help on the train tickets - I was having trouble figuring out the cost on the website!
