My husband and I are planning to do a Rhine River cruise and was wondering which place would be best to spend the night. We will have a car. I would also like to know where is best to catch the river cruise. How does this work with a car. I am thinking we drive somewhere up stream, how do we get back down to where we catch the crusie? As you can see I am pretty lost at this area. We are flying into Frankfort and think a nice river cruise and a nice hotel to spend the night can help with jet lag and get us ready for our two week tour of Germany Austria and Switzerland.

For boat schedules google %26quot;K-D Line%26quot; . Note that the boats going downstream (generally north) are quite a bit faster and you see the same scenery as those fighting the current.
Some people prefer Bingen but I like Rudesheim (the %26quot;U%26quot; is umlauted). I%26#39;d take the car to Rudesheim and park it there.
I%26#39;d board the boat in Rudesheim and sail down the most scenic part of the Rhine. You%26#39;ll see castles, quaint villages and plenty of spectacular scenery.
Get off at Braubach and take the tour of Marksburg castle. It is the only castle along the Rhine that was never taken and destroyed. The view down to the Rhine is excellent and it is easy to see why the castles were so effective. The tour used to only be in German, so if this is still the case, buy a booklet from the shop that has an English version of what you%26#39;ll be seeing.
Then if time, catch the train from Braubach into Koblenz and walk along the river. The central area has a good view of the fortress and many restaurants. Have a nice dinner in Koblenz and take a fast train back to Rudesheim in the evening. If you don%26#39;t want to venture into Koblenz, take the train back to Rudesheim and spend the night there or somewhere in the vicinity.

Hi there,
Ruedesheim is a typical touristical city and pretty nice. But there are more tourists from asia and all over the world then locals. Lot s of shops sell things that are as typical for the middle rhine area as fishs are living in the desert. You should think of taking a hotel at Bacharach or another small village offside Bingen and Ruedesheim.
It s not far away to drive from Bacharach for example to Bingen (12 km). By this way you can surely learn more about the country and the people.
Greets from Oberdiebach,
Christian

Further to all the advice above I%26#39;d say don%26#39;t bother with the car use the train. There is a station at frankfurt airport and it goes directly to the Rhine area, last year I caught it to Bingen (there may be one change) it is very cheap, fast and efficient and much more relaxing than driving in a strange country. Also this avoids the need to worry about picking it up again after your cruise. Most of the little towns in this area of the rhine have train stations in the centre with regular (at least hourly) services.

forgot to say, in terms of a base, we stayed in Bingen, Bacharach, St Goar, Oberwesel and Koblez and they were all absolutely delightful. This is such a wonderful area I really don%26#39;t think you can go wrong where ever you choose to stay.

We have been thinking of doing a train and also a car. Since we aren%26#39;t familiar with the trains and where they go. It is kind of overwhelming. Our itinerary is Munich to the Rhine River cruise. Then to Rothenburg then on to Fussen or somewhere in that area. Then into Switzerland and staying outside Innsbruck at a town called Mutters. After that on to the Jungfrau area and then on to Heidelburg befoe returning to Munich. Although we have been talking about skipping Heidelburg and flying our of Zurich. Any help with transportation would really be appreciated. We are so excited. I have been having back trouble for years and of course dr. says now is the time for surgery. I will be having that in four days, not major surgery but i will be down for awhile, so planning is something I have plenty of time to do. Question. Does anyone know anything about a bed and breakfast in Fussen called Suzanne%26#39;s B%26amp;B? I have been reading reviews and I have run into a couple that are pretty harsh about her and the way she treats her guests. Up until that time I was thinking this looked pretty good. Great location and price was pretty good. Any info is appreciated.

You may be planning to cover too much ground in two weeks. You might start with map and notice how you are zig-zagging north %26amp; south. For example, Fuessen is near Munich. Going from Munich to the Rhine and then back to Fuessen burns a lot of time just traveling. The same is true with Jungfrau-%26gt;Heidelberg-%26gt;Munich.
You have picked several tourist hotspots in three countries and might miss really seeing any of them for the rush. No one can know what best meets your tastes but I would focus on two areas. For example: Munich-Fuessen-German Alps (Zugspitze instead of Jungfrau) could be one area and the Rhine another. It would be reasonable to visit Rothenburg and/or Heidelberg enroute between the two areas. Fly into Munich, out of Frankfurt.
A similar scenario could be developed for Munich and the Swiss Alps.

Ok, great, now if this was your trip, and you had two weeks, where would you go? My HAVE TO VISITS are: the fussen, ruette, area with all the castles...gotta see. The gimmelwal, murren, jungfrau area is a must. We were doing the rhine as it was a day to get over our flight and just rest. I DON%26#39;T HAVE TO SEE is Heidelburg do the rhine(but would like to). I have to visit Mutters in Austria right outside Innsbruck and Gizwell Switzerland between Luzern and Zurich. As you can see Bavaria and Switzerland Jungfrau area is what we really like. Just looking for suggestion from people who know the area better than I. Thanks for taking the time to answer

No one can tell you how to plan your trip. Here are a couple tools:
Trains: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en
Road time: http://www.viamichelin.com
The Rhine is over 400 kilometers from Munich, or about 4 hours by train, same by car. If you return through Rothenburg by train, it will take longer as Roth. is on a spur line.
If you must see it all, start perhaps in Frankfurt as it is very near the middle Rhine, then go through Rothenburg and/or Heidelberg on to the German castles, Reute, etc. and finally to Switzerland, flying out of Zurich. Check the times to travel using a road mapping or train program. I still think that it will be a tight fit.
