Berlin

If you want to see Germany you should however also consider to visit cities/towns not destroyed in WWII.

|||

What do you mean %26quot;most interesting stuff on WWII%26quot;? Ruins? Museums? Fortifications?

Cities like Dresden, Wuerzburg, Berlin, Friedrichshafen, Schweinfurt, Hamburg ,Frankfurt were more or less totally destroyed and rebuilt. Some of the city centers (Wuerzburg, Dresden) were carefully restored using the old blueprints to the point that you can hardly tell that the buildings are post-WWII (until you get inside of them and notice the modern plumbing), others - like Frankfurt - have been re-built with skyscrapers, otyhers (Friedrichshafen, Schweinfurt) are mstly bland architecture.

Some cities have interesting museums covering the War, like the undeground bunker tour in Berlin, the SS bunkers at the Obersalzberg (Berchtesgaden).

Along the channel coast near Ostende, Belgium, you can see parts of the Westwall bunker fortifications.

Hi

the city in germany with the most Ruins, Museums, and Fortifications yes. I know that all cities have their own unique memories and sites on WW2 but, which would be the one city that i would be able to visit with the most on WW2?

Thanks for your time, brought up this topic the reason being i have%26#39;nt got the time nor money to visit the whole of Germany.lol

thanks

When my son visits us in Stuttgart in a few months he has expressed an interest in seeing part of the Maginot Line in nearby France, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouvrage_Schoenenbourg .

I know in Stuttgart many bunkers are still around, which I imagine would also be the case in other German cities besides Berlin. The ease of visiting them is another matter. Stuttgart was heavily bombed as most other cities, and after the war the rubble was trucked up to a nearby mountain, making it about 150 feet higher.

I thought that the country of Luxembourg was good for World War II museums (site of the Battle of the Bulge), and there is also the American cemetary in Hamm near Luxembourg City where Gemeral Patton was buried if you happen to be American.

Hi

thanks marcopolko will consider Stuttgart as another destination as also Luxembourg, will have to sit down with my better half and see what are we going to opt for.

Forgot, not American i%26#39;m gibraltarian part britain. Read a book on General Patton very intresting.

thanks for your time

Stuttgart is a nice place to visit, but not for World War II history. Most of the places that are left are bunkers with only very limited access (usually at most once a year, and for a very limited number of people, and when it%26#39;s first announced, it%26#39;s already too late! In the past few years, the bunker hotel under the Marktplatz- square in front of the city hall has been open for the Long Night of Museums, this year on April 5. It%26#39;s so popular, that several hour waits are then necessary to visit.). Another bunker is a well-used road tunnel, so again, not much there. There is a pointed above-ground bunker near the Feuerbach station that can be seen, but hardly worth making a special trip for it, and some other very sparse above ground remains I believe on or near Killesberg. For the Maginot line, Karlsruhe would be closer, but Stuttgart would be in general a better place to stay.

I think that for most places in Germany it will be similar. Berlin is probably one of the few places in Germany that can support a bunker tour throughout the year.

I believe that Remagen also has a war museum, as that was where the bridge wasn%26#39;t completely destroyed and the Allies made their first crossing of the Rhine there.

|||

I would suggest Berlin then... But you must know that any city you go to will have things about WW 1 and 2....

Honestly the nicest place%26#39;s to go to... is Cologne, and Hamburg!

Colgone... is just FAB the Landscape is breath taking...

Hamburg... are the most well educated people... their speech/ grammer is the best! They are known for their peeerrrrfection!

Munich is nice to.. but oh gosh what a heavy accent.... lol.... If you do go to Munich... you must take the Train.. or drive an hour southeast to Fussen... the Castle from King Ludwig is there... well right outside of the town... also you are only 20 min from Austria... which is wonderful too.... and the Germany Army has a Base in Fussen.. which is pretty neat... since you like WW II things....

Hi

thanks both for that info very helpful

Hello,

you could be interested in visiting Nrnberg (Nuremberg) to see the WW2 Documentation Centre Party Rally Grounds, the Zeppelin Field, the Zeppelin Grandstand and the unfinished Congress Hall.

You can find some information in english on this website:

%26gt; the city in germany with the most Ruins

Some buildings have been kept in ruins as memorials. Most of them has Berlin. Otherwise ruins have been at least cleared. In Berlin you can find many empty plots where once buildings had been. It%26#39;s also relative easy to find buildings scattered with bullets wholes in Berlin.

%26gt; Museums

You will find many museums and memorials about the Third Reich. But barely any which will deal mainly with WWII only. To some extent

the German-Russian Museum in Berlin-Karlshorst (in the former head quarter of the Red Army)

http://www.museum-karlshorst.de/

the Peace Museum Bridge of Remagen (in the remains of this bridge destroyed in WWII)

http://www.bruecke-remagen.de/index_en.htm

%26gt; Fortifications

In the sense of %26quot;Gibraltar%26quot;?

The German Confederation has built a few fortresses of this kind early 19th century (e.g. Luxembourg, Koblenz, Ulm). But at least these 3 have never seen any contest.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Confederation

The only bigger fortifications under contest in WWII were all outside Germany.

There are however bunkers e.g. in Berlin you can tour

see e.g. this thread

If you go to Berlin a few further museums which may be of interest to you
