Hi,
I%26#39;m looking to book a trip for intermediate skiiers close to Munich in March (before Easter). Are the reds %26amp; blues in the Garmish-Partenkirchen area generally skiiable at this stage in the season?
The alternative is to drive in the other direction (from Munich airport) into Salzburgerland if the conditions on the German side are not good. Does the season last much longer over in Austria?
Also if anyone has good recommendations for mid-range hotels in or around Garmisch to book at the last minute, that would also be appreciated.
Thanks...

The other alternative is North East to the Bavarian Forest, generally colder than the Alps so more reliable snow, although obviously the high alps have the altitude benefit. Check out the Arber mountain - World Cup races take place 1st weekend in March so that shows you the confidence in the snow. Certainly very cold at night so good for snow making www.arber.de. Bayerisch Eisenstein is the best base for reaching the slopes.

Dear redgreenyyz,
The skiing in Garmisch has been pretty good considering our lack of actual snowfall of late. It has been very cold at night that keeps the snow on the mountains and allows for the making of new snow. The Zugspitz, our highest mountain is very good and has nothing but blue and red making it perfect for intermediates. The ski areas just across the border in Austria, Ehrwald, Biberwihr, Lermoos, are very good as well. The forecast is for colder daytime temperatures which could very well include snowfall.
For hotel recommendations, the Post Hotel in Grainau is quite nice and reasonably priced. Grainau is just a couple km from Garmisch and very quiet. If you are looking for nightlife as well, might want to stick to Garmisch. Many hotels have special packages that include the ski-pass. You can call the Gramisch Tourist office at (0)8821-180 700, or Grainau at (0)8821-981850, give them your dates and what you are looking for in accommodations and they will give you some recommendations. Garmisch and Grainau both have many vacation apartments and bed %26amp; breakfasts as well. They both also have websites: www.garmisch-partenkirchen.de; www.grainau.de
Good luck. I really don%26#39;t think you will be disappointed. This is a beautiful area and good skiing for intermediates.

Thanks to you both for the tips... will do some last-minute snow checks before flying out.
