skiing close to frankfurt

We are arriving in Frankfurt Dec 22nd this year for a week. What would be the best skiing not too far from Frankfurt?

There are a few slopes in the northern Black Forest above Baden-Baden. Whether there will be enough snow for skiing is anybody%26#39;s guess.

If you want to do serious skiing you will have to go to the Alps - German, Swiss or Austrian. Then the possibilities are endless.

So far it looks good on the snow front. However no guarantee on the situation in 6 weeks.

basic: uplands around Frankfurt (e.g. Taunus, Odenwald). Short slopes, not always snow - something for beginners.

medium: Northern Black Forest

good: Southern Black Forest

excellent: Alps

Bad thing: the distance is also increasing from basic to excellent in this list. To the Alps you need approx. 5 hours by train.

The closest snow-guaranteed skiing resort to Frankfurt is Mt. Titlis near Engelberg, Switzerland. It%26#39;s a 4 1/2hrs drive and you can even book it as day trip by bus from Frankfurt.

I%26#39;ll be in Frankfurt for a weekend in February and would love to spend my Saturday snowboarding in the Alps. Id rather not do it as a day trip - Ive heard you have to get on the bus at 3 am!

Any suggestions on how to get there and where to stay Friday night so I can feel rested before my day on the slopes?

I just came back from skiing the Feldberg ski resort in the Lower Black Forest.

It took me 2 hours to get to Freiburg and another 20 mins from there to the skiing region by car. By train anything around 2-3 hours may be realistic.

Maybe I was just lucky, but the quality of snow, the weather and the well laid-out slopes were top quality (plus, you get wonderful panoramas of the Black Forest even overlooking the Alps). There is plenty of variety (3 black slopes, plenty of red and even more blue) to keep you occupied for 2-3 days. The lifts are mostly T-bars but the most important three lifts are all seated lifts.

The resort towns Hinterzarten or along the gorgeous Titisee (5 mins away) are not apres ski havens, but idyllic and gourmet-friendly.
