Hotel Ludwig der Bayer Ettal? Prices/Reviews? Itinerary ok?

Hi,

My husband and I are going to be in the Schwangau/Linderhof/Ettal area at the beginning of March, and I%26#39;m in search of a place to stay. I came across a hotel that appears to be at the Ettal Abbey, and it looks very nice: Hotel %26quot;Ludwig der Bayer%26quot; Ettal. Has anyone stayed there? I%26#39;m looking for a review/pricing, etc.

I%26#39;m also looking for thoughts on our itinerary for the area. I do know its very aggressive, but we%26#39;re looking to hit the big sites in the region in little time. Do you think the following is do-able:

We want to do the romantic road (starting at Rothenberg ODT, incld. Dinkelsbuhl), then weiskirche and Neuschwanstein on the first day. We%26#39;d like to stay around Ettal/Linderhof that night and then visit Linderhof and Ettal Abbey on the second day. At the end of the second day we%26#39;ll return to Munich.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks--

KCB

Personally, I would skip Dinkelsbuehl, you%26#39;ve already will have been in Rothenburg which most people consider to be the best of the walled towns, there really isn%26#39;t a reason to see another in your short time. Make sure that you take the time to enjoy Rothenburg, and drive down to the river for a lovely view of the town on the skyline. Then take the A-7 sutobahn south toward Fuessen. Just past Memmingen leave the autobahn and visit the church of the monastery at Ottobeuren. It is jam-packed full with more beautiful Baroque religious items than can be easily comprehended. Rejoin the autobahn for Fuessen abd Neuschwanstein. If it%26#39;s early enough you can visit the palace, but I would plan to spend the night there in Hohenschwangau, and you can have a close-up view of the lit-up by night palace from your room if you stay at a hotel such as the excellent small Villa Jaegerhaus (click on my name for a review and another reviewer has some excellent photos). Take the first English tour the next morning if you already haven%26#39;t visited, then drive to Reutte, Austria for a lovely drive through the Austrian Alps to Linderhof. Then make the short detour to quickly see the painted houses of Oberammergau and then on for a quick visit of the Ettal Monastery which is on your way.

I would not worry about missing the Wieskirche, its really not that special as there are many other Baroque churches that are as equally nice (Upper Swabia is full of them), but there is only one Ottobeuren so don%26#39;t miss it.

Great advice-- thanks! If staying in Schwangau overnight, we%26#39;d probably try to do Nueschwanstein, Linderhof and Ettal in one day-- do you think that%26#39;s do-able? I stayed at the JagerHaus as a little girl and it was wonderful-- its definitely the best place in the area!

Yes, just take the first English tour of Neuschwanstein in the morning, and you could be at Linderhof before noon and have plenty of time to visit it and the Ettal Abbey.

KCB,

Villa Jagerhaus is a must if you are traveling to the Fussen area. Room 62 is a corner room with views of Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. I would make the short trip to Wieskirche if possible, it is one of a kind. Took a friend there last year in February and she still is amazed at the little church in the meadow.
