My husband and I are americans traveling to Traben Trarbach on a river cruise in early March. The ship offers tours but we like to explore independently and as cheaply as possible. We%26#39;re trying to decide is it cheaper to take a train or bus in Traben-Trarbach to reach Luxembourg city or take the ship%26#39;s tour. What%26#39;s the approximate cost %26amp; time using train vs bus? Do you need to show passports traveling between the two countries?
Appreciate any advice.

I personally would probably opt for the bus tour if they visit the places you want to see. If for instance, you wanted to visit the American military cemetary in Hamm where General Patton is buried, you would then have to deal with local transportation to get there. Also, you will get commentary on the bus and should learn some history which otherwise you probably wouldn%26#39;t know. Another thing is that if on your own you return late you miss the boat, whereas they will have to make special arrangements to accomodate the bus tour.
You do not have to show a passsport when traveling between many countries in Europe, including the crossing from Germany to Luxembourg.

From: Traben-Trarbach
To: Luxembourg
In case you%26#39;re not visiting Trier already on another day I would recommend Trier instead of Luxembourg. Historically much more significant. Also closer, thus 2 hours more for sightseeing.

Normally not. BUT this does not mean you can travel without passport. You MUST have your passport with you when crossing a border.

I appreciate both your responses to my questions. It is something to think about when traveling in a foreign country. If there weren%26#39;t alot of time constraints I would probably try to take the train and explore.
Marcopolko %26amp; Abalada, thank you for taking the time to respond.
