The trip is in celebration of our youngest son who will be graduating high school this year. He feels a strong tie to his german heritage and is extremely interested in history.

If you are visiting Freiberg (Saxony) you are doing a lot of zigtaging around, as this is fairly close to Berlin. If you mean Freiburg im Breisgau, and I take it your Royal Castle trip tour may be a visit to Neuschwanstein Palace, then there is no need to go back to Munich as it is on the way to Freiburg. Perhaps if you checked your spellings, if there are two dots over a vowel the vowel should be immediately followed by an e, and you gave a clarification of what Schlossberg castle is and where it is located, the same with the clock museum, you might get some real advice.
To me it seems that you are running around trying to %26quot;see it all%26quot; which is impossible, Germany has over 30,000 palaces and castles alone. You can spend weeks in one place and nearby it and not run out of excellent things to do anywhere in Germany. There is no reason really to waste your valuable time constantly traveling when there are so many excellent sights nearby.

Guess you mean Freiberg im Breisgau (Black Forest region).
Mar 23 Rent a car and drive to Hohenschwangau
(not need to backtrack to Munich)
Mar 24 drive to Freiburg
Mar 25 drive through the Black Forest and end up in Heidelberg (not Rothenburg)
Mar 26 tour Heidelberg and drive the Castle Road to Rothenburg

Mar 27 tour Rothenburg, drive to Wrzburg, return the car there and evening train to Berlin
%26quot;See Schlossberg castle.%26quot;
There is a Schlossberg (= castle mountain) in Freiburg. But no castle anymore. Only a few foundation walls.
There is a watch tower on the Schlossberg
wikipedia.org/wiki/29
But with just a few hours in Freiburg there are more important sights

%26quot;Tour Berlin%26quot;
That%26#39;s ... kind of nonsense.
You cannot see Berlin really in one day. You really need 3-4 days to experience Berlin. Unlike other capitals (e.g. Paris, Vienna) Berlin was never designed to be a showpiece to impress the visitor on first sight. And for the dynamic vibe of this city you need more time than just a day.
I highly recommend to start with a walking tour

I agree to abalada. Skip the Freiburg Schlossberg, just stroll about the old town.
|||
If you want to see a nice castle see the Schloss Hohenzollern not to far away from Stuttgart and maybe an hour away from Freiburg.
Also, the renowned spa town of Baden-Baden at the northern tip of the Black Forest may be to your liking.

There are two excellent Hohenzollern palaces/castles. The one by Hechingen Burg Hohenzollern was the family seat of this influential Prussian family (www.burg-hohenzollern.com), and there is also the excellent castle/palace at Sigmaringen, Schloss Sigmaringen(www.hohenzollern.com).
Going toward Stuttgart from Hechingen, Tuebingen is a lovely old college town with hilly cobblestone streets, and just north of it is the well preserved medieval Bebenhausen Monastery (see www.schloesser-und-gaerten.de , select English and look under monasteries. The German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg also manage other interesting monasteries, gardens, palaces and castles. Have a look at some of there other offerings which will be on your way. Besides having descriptions of the places, this website also has their history and a few anecdotes about them.)
