How does the postal service work?

I will be staying in a flat - a flat in a house, not an apartment block - and want to order a book from amazon.de.

Do flats have letter boxes, or are there individual postboxes in the hall?

Does the postman deliver parcels to individual flats or do you get a card notifying you to collect it from somewhere?

Amazon.de use Deutsche Post%26#39;s parcel delivery subsidiary DHL.

DHL makes one attempt to deliver to your apartment door. If no one opens they%26#39;ll leave a notice that you can pick up the parcel the next 7 days starting from the day after the direct delivery attempt from the next post office. The address of that post office is also printed on that note.

So on amazon.de you enter the address the following:

FirstName LastName

c/o (or) bei FristName LastName (person who onwns/rents that apartment)

NameOfTheStreet XX (house number)

12345 (ZIP code) CityName
