Are there any bus or train routes going between Heidelberg to Saarbrucken? We are trying not to rent a car if public transportation is available.

DB timetable

From: Heidelberg
To: Saarbruecken
If it is %26quot;Saarbrucken area%26quot; it will depend to where exactly. You can give any bus stop and even any address into the DB timetable.
A small part of the Saarland (around Homburg) is part of the VRN, the local public transport network of the Heidelberg region.
vrn.de/imperia/vrn-tarifgebiet_1_2008.pdf
A 24 hours mini group (2-5 persons) ticket covering the whole VRN area is EUR 18,00.

Another option would be a VRN 24 hours mini group ticket just from Heidelberg to Mannheim (EUR 14,00) and from Mannheim on using the Rhineland-Palatinate ticket (EUR 26,00) which covers all regional transport as shown on this map
der-takt.de/fileadmin/karte_rp_ticket.html
The VRN tickets and the RP ticket do cover only regional trains (S-Bahn, RB, RE). Select at the DB timetable %26quot;only local transport%26quot; if you plan to use them. They do however cover all other local public transport: buses and e.g. in Heidelberg and Mannheim also the trams.
