Rothenburg

Has anyone gone to Rothenburg from Munich? Could you please tell me if it is an easy one day trip and worth it? Thank you so much.

By car or train?

%26gt; an easy one day trip

It%26#39;s quite far for a day trip.

%26gt; and worth it?

It%26#39;s worth a visit.

I have done it as a day trip from Munich one time - it is definitely possible but you arrive after the big amount of the daytrippers (esp. coach tours) and have to depart before them, so that you only experience the town as stuffed to the gills. It is supposed to be much more charming in the evning when the coach tourists have departed.

Thanks so much. We would be on a train, no car. It sounds like it might not be one of our best choices if we take the train. Good help!

It doesnt matter whether you go there by car or by train. It is simply too far to get there ear?y enough, unless you prefer to get up VERY early. You can look up the itienrary on www.bahn.de - and will see what is the first connection to and the last connection from Rothenburg is.

Thank you so much. It is exciting to have someone from Germany to also respond. Very special.

It sounds like we could use our time more wisely elsewhere. We plan on going to some smaller towns near Munich that are charming and less tourist packed. That sounds better and less rushed.

Rothenburg at night is lovely, and there are lots of inexpensive bed and breakfasts. It%26#39;s not nearly as crowded in the evening, and there is also a Night Watchman tour.

Thank you so much.

Just to reinforce what has been said here - especially during the tourist season, the evenings in Rotheburg after the tour buses etc. have left transforms Rothenburg into a MUCH more pleasant place to chill out and meander.

In 2006 we spent three nights in R during April. During the day it was pretty crowded, but in the late afternoon and into the evening, it was MUCH nicer.

I just watched a Rick Steve%26#39;s Germany DVD and Rothenburg looks glorious. Thanks again apecs999, you have been a tremendous help!!

I just want to add an editorial comment about Rothenburg:

Many people think that this city is kind of fake (of course, some do not know the history of the city (which you will learn about if you take the Night Watchman Tour). The %26quot;fake-iness%26quot; is due to, in large part, the large tourist crowds, especially during the summer months. True, prosperity has made the city sparkly clean - freshly painted houses and shops, clean streets, lots of restaurants and specialty stores, flowers in window boxes.

However, it IS a genuine city in historical terms and you can appreciate this if you can see it in its more relaxed atmosphere - that is, after the hords have left.

As I said before, we spent three nights there and the evenings were absolutely wonderful. If you have a Rick Steves book on Germany, read what he says. I consider him pretty savvy and knows a tourist trap when he sees one.

Blowing through the city in a day trip just doesn%26#39;t cut it and can leave the wrong impression.
