If you stop in a Shell gas station you can buy one or two maps in their large scale (1-inch is about 4-miles) regional map series (Die Shell Regional Karte)of Germany (18 maps cover the whole country). They%26#39;re expensive (7.50 euros), but well worth the cost. I have looked at maps from numerous sources and I found them to be the best. They will show ALL rural roads, interesting towns, churches, castles, palaces, monasteries, waterfalls, vista points, scenic roads and rivers, etc. The better places to visit are highlighted in yellow if cultural and green if natural, and the best places also have a box around them. Their rating system is very good, and I usually agree with the ratings. Even non-highlighted places can be excellent to visit. They also indicate roads subject to traffic jams.

With these maps you can find months%26#39; worth of excellent places to visit, and it%26#39;s easy to combine visits to more distant places with things along the way. They are hard to get used to at first, because of the large scale you tend to be already past the place before you begin looking for it. We%26#39;ve spent many an enjoyable day visiting a number of places shown on the maps.

These maps are all that is really necessary to have an excellent vacation.

There is a car ferry between Bingen-Rdesheim and St. Goar-St. Goarshausen(which is downriver). You can drive on the Bingen side of the Rhine to St. Goar. It%26#39;s a cute village, Rheinfels Castle there is only open during the weekend until Easter. Cross the Rhine at St. Goar and once on the other side drive to Braubach to see Marksburg Castle. It%26#39;s the only castle along the Rhine not destroyed. There%26#39;s a small parking lot about 1/2 or 3/4 way up to the castle - you walk the rest. Then drive back to Rdesheim(a touristy town) and car ferry over to Bingen. There are alot of options along the Rhine - You could also drive to Koblenz, cross over, and drive back to Rdesheim - stopping at the villages along the way. Check out the link above from abalada for the Rhine valley.

A great castle is Burg Eltz at Moselkern along the Mosel river. The walk through the forest is worth the trip. They open March 21st.

I enjoyed the towns of Bad Muenster and Bad Krueznach(the Altstadt).
