We had a nice time at the Hotel Leopold in Schwabing, it had a nice restaurant. It seems they have a family connection to Canada somehow, and we were made very welcome. It isn%26#39;t 5star or whatever, but had a nice feel, and the area really is busy at night. Plus, the subway stop is close, and so Marienplatz is quick and easy, or Odeonsplatz for the shopping...

Take the S-8 line into Munich and get off at MArienplatz. When you arrive at Marienplatz, you will be right at the town hall (Rathaus) and the Glockenspiel up in the tower plays at 11:00AM and noon (I%26#39;m pretty sure, anyway).
With the Rathaus at your back, walk a block over to the Viktualienmarkt (outdoors farmers%26#39; market kind of thing). Interesting browsing and some inexpensive food places.
Back at the Rathus, facing it, take the street to the left and walk about 4 blocks to the Theatinerkirche (goldish-colored church on the left).
Back at the Rathaus, get directions to the Hofbr?uhaus at the tourist office - it is only about a ten minute walk. Great fun beer hall!
Facing the Rathaus - the church with the two domed towers to your left (Frauenkirche) is worth a peek inside (look for the devel%26#39;s foot print in the floor at the main entrance.) You can go up to the top of one of the towers - great photo op!
As far as where to stay, there are lots of posts here about suggestions. If you want to stay close to the train station (Hauptbahnhof), I can suggest the Hotel Mark.
