I am visiting Austria and Germany this May. We are trying to decide if it is worth it to keep the rental car and drive into Munich or take the train from Salzburg. We have 4 adults and 1 child and will already be renting a car to go elsewhere before heading into Munich. But the rental agencies charge a return fee when you cross country borders. Does anyone have any advice for which we should select? And if you think the train is better- should be book the tickets online before traveling or just get them when we are there. I like to be prepared but heard that trains are often cheaper if you buy them in the country you are traveling in.
Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

You can travel with regional trains from Salzburg to Munich on the Bavaria Ticket. EUR 27,00 for 2-5 persons. This ticket covers also the S-Bahn, U-Bahn (metro), trams and buses in Munich. Validity
Mo-Fr from 9am till 3am next day
Sa,So from midnight till 3am next day
DB timetable

From: Salzburg
To: Munich
and select as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot; if you plan to use the Bavaria Ticket. It won%26#39;t be however shown as a price option.
You can buy the Bavaria Ticket on spot from DB ticket machines at Salzburg Hbf (main railway station). You cannot reserve seats on regional trains. But as these trains start in Salzburg it won%26#39;t be a problem to find seats for you if you turn up in time (e.g. 10 minutes before departure).

Definitely by train, using the Bayernkarte. It%26#39;s good for one day.
I%26#39;m not so sure whether the Bayernkarte also covers the U-Bahn going north and south in Munich. It%26#39;s my understanding that it is only goood going east west, because it uses the underground Bahn(RR)tracks. But I%26#39;m sure abalada will give you the correct info.

Bayernkarte = map of Bavaria
The ticket is called %26quot;Bayern Ticket%26quot; or %26quot;Bavaria Ticket%26quot;.
%26gt; also covers the U-Bahn going north and south in Munich.
Is covered. Every means of local public transport inside the MVV is covered.

True also for all other similar networks in Bavaria, e.g. the VGN in the Nuremberg region.
Not covered are however the buses in Salzburg (as Salzburg is not Bavaria).
Bavaria Ticket is strictly seen an offer of the state Bavaria. Not one by DB (German Rail). That%26#39;s the reason why it%26#39;s not shown as a price option by the DB timetable. In Germany the states are responsible for local public transport. Thus Bavaria invites tenders for specific public transport tasks and leases this task for a number of years to a transport company (e.g. DB or other companies).
