Hi. Would like to check how safe is it to drive in Germany between 11pm to sunrise.
Are there enough street lamps on the autobahn and secondary roads and even the smaller roads?
Will there be much speeding due to less cars at night?
Thanks in advance.

There are no street lamps on the autobahn or the country roads. Thats what your headlights are for.

Altamiro is, of course, correct. The good news is that the autobahns are so well made that, if you follow their recommended speed limits, you will not outrun your lights. Go to the article on the autobahns at:
www.gettingaroundgermany.info/autobahn.htm
and you can get a feel for driving the autobahns.
The autobahns are great for gentle curves and easy grades. All in all, the German road system at night is the equal or superior to any in the world for safety. However, on some lightly traveled autobahns at night that do not have speed limits (like between Garmisch and Munich) you may see some people trying to find out if their Porsche GT2 can really do 320km/hr-- so stay in the right lane except to pass.

Thanks to Altamiro and EdUSA for your answers.
Besides in terms of speeding cars, in terms of road lighting is it well lit in most places?

There are only streetlamps in cities or villages, eventhough there are small villages that turn their lamps off after midnight to save energy. But nonetheless it is very safe to drive at night in Germany. And there is less traffic at nights, so you actually get the chance to drive and use the german autobahn!!!

Although rural roads are not lighted, you%26#39;ll be fine. What I really would be worried about is the driver falling asleep. Also, be wary when getting in another lane on the autobahn to pass, some of those cars coming up from behind could be going over 250 kph.

The only thing I would watch out for on the autobahn at night are the 18-wheelers (lorries, I think you call themin Singapore). They have restricted speeds and tend to slow down considerably at any uphill grade. It%26#39;s a a nuisance when you are in the left lane, passing them and some high-speed car is on your tail, blinking his headlights like mad (although this is supposed to be illegal). So, before getting into the left lane, always check whowill behind you in the left lane.

If it%26#39;s raining country roads are stressful at night for longer trips as your eyes have always to adopt from the head lights of oncoming traffic to complete darkness. And esp. in forested areas there is the risk of crossing game at night or dawn.
Autobahn are fenced off to minimize these risk. Also less stress with head lights of oncoming traffic as the lanes are separated by scrub or other blinds.
There is less traffic, but even at odd times I experienced traffic jams on some autobahns.
There are naughty things like night construction sites and heavy load transports which can be so wide that the block the whole autobahn. Both will be however well marked with flashing lights.

Thanks to all for your answers. Will take them into consideration
