Mosel/Rhein June-July

We will be in the Mosel/Rhein area for 5 nights at the end of June to beginning of July. We will be staying 3 nights in Cochem at Ferienhaus Erholung and 2 nights in Sankt Goar at Hotel Hauser.

When we are in Cochem we will visit the castle in town (unsure of the name) and we would like to visit Burg Eltz Castle also. Since we will not be renting a car, how do we get to Burg Eltz Castle from Cochem??

When we are staying at Sankt Goar, after dropping off our luggage in Sankt Goar we will take the 1 hour ferry from Sankt Goar to Bacharach, because I read that this portion of the Rhein is very beautiful between Sankt Goar to Bacharach or vice versa. We also want to climb to the top of the hill in Bacharach since the pics I saw were just awesome. What other areas nearby can we visit while we are in Sankt Goar for the 2 days?

Your opinion of these 2 inns - Ferienhaus Erholung at Cochem and Hotel Hauser at Sankt Goar? The people that I communicated with in these 2 inns were just so nice. Just everyone I communicated with in Germany were the same way so very pleasant and polite.

What is the weather like in the Mosel/Rhein area during this time of the year? When I look at historical information in a weather website it looks like there is a mixed weather, some sun, some rain?

I also noticed that the inns and hotels in Germany seem so much more reasonable in comparison to the rest of the western countries in Europe. This area was the best value I found for our dollars.

Any recommendations or inputs you can provide would be greatly apreciated. Thank you....

%26gt; how do we get to Burg Eltz Castle from Cochem??

train to Moselkern than walk

A rather easy walk of 30 min. The other castles in the area are much more uphill. Burg Eltz is in a remote side valley. If it would not have been so remote it would have been destroyed with the time like (nearly) all other castles.

%26gt; What is the weather like in the Mosel/Rhein area during this time of the year?

Not really predictable. rain or sun. chilly or hot.

The German weather service has made for the first time a 6 months weather forecast: hot summer (short but heavy rainfalls are still possible)

plenty of options in the Middle Rhine Valley

From Cochem a trip to Trier, the oldest German city, would be also an option.

From a certain distance on the Rhineland-Palatinate ticket is a good deal. A day ticket covering all regional trains and buses in the state of Rhineland-Palatine and a bit beyond (see map)

bahn.de/regional/view/mdb/pv/planen_buchen/l

EUR 26,00 for 2-5 persons. Validity

Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,So: from midnight till 3am next day

A valid train ticket will give you a 20% discount on the KD boats on the Moselle and Rhine.

This page says explicitly that the RP Ticket is valid for all railroads shown on the linked map.

But I%26#39;m not sure if this is correct. I guess this is an error.

The map is different than the one which had been there previously. Here the old map from an official Rhineland-Palatinate page

Thank you abalada for all the info. I will look at the information and websites you provided. Thanks for the tip on the train fare cost.

We very much like german food and also fast food like the Bratwurst...Germany%26#39;s Bratwurst are so much more superior than in the states. In Germany the Bratwurst seems to snap as you bite in to it....it%26#39;s so tasty.

Thank you again.....

Here%26#39;s your info for the walk to Burg Eltz:

The F. Erholung is a healthy walk from the town center along a busy road. I%26#39;d prefer to be in the old town center somewhere. I%26#39;ve stayed at two different private B%26amp;B%26#39;s on Loehrstrasse just a couple of blocks from the Marktplatz and found the location ideal - price is around 20-25 Euros per person at Haus Hilken or Haus Mattes for clean, simple, friendly accommodations. Values are indeed solid in Germany, especially in smaller towns and villages, when compared with Italy and other western nations. Have a look at these suggestions too:

Try the Alte Thorschenke for an upscale experince.

Cochem%26#39;s castle is called the Reichsburg - good tour and very good free-filight falconry show on the grounds.

Thank you Russ for all the information, I will look into the websites you provided.

Germany is the best value I found for us to go on vacation. Also they are ever so kind in their email response.

For Ferienhaus Erholung they are offering us a Nonsmoking room with balcony and view of mosel river and castle view. It was difficult to find an inn that would guarantee a nonsmoking room. When you say Ferienhaus Ehrolung is a healthy walk from town, is this about 15 to 20 minutes from town at normal walking speed??

Thank you....
