traveling with teens in Munich

We will be touring Germany in late May/early June with our 13 yr. old daughter and 15 yr. old son. We will be in Munich from May 28-31 and I would love any ideas on things that may interest them. We are taking a trip to Dachau for sure, and the Neuschwanstein castle on the way to Munich. Both kids play soccer and hockey here in the states and would love to see a soccer game while there. Can anyone tell me if there would be any games in the area during that time? Would there be ice in the Olympic arena at that time, and do they have open ice skating times? Thanks in advance!

The Bundesliga season ends mid of May. And on 7. June the European Football Championships in Austria/Switzerland starts. Maybe there is a preparation friendly in Munich.

%26gt; and do they have open ice skating times?

Yes, but %26quot;The public ice skating ends 20 April 2008 and starts again 23 June 2008.%26quot;

Despite this bad luck in timing it will still make sense to visit the Allianz Arena and the Olympic Park. Two of the most interesting and famous sport complexes.

Deutsches Museum - a huge science museum

%26quot;Among the particular highlights (besides many others!) are the first motorized aircraft built by the Wright brothers, the U1 submarine, the first program-controlled computer (Conrad Zuses Z3), and Diesels original engine on the island; the first motorcar by Karl Benz in the transport museum; the Douglas DC3 at Schlei?heim%26quot;

Also interesting: the Residence and Nypmhenburg Palace/Marstallmuseum

The ice skating arena will be closed for the public from end of april until end of june. The soccer leagues I and II have the last game on may 17th, you might be able to catch a game of the minor leagues. The Regionalliga Sd has their last game on May 31, the amateur team of Bayern Munich has a home game at 2 p.m in the municipal stadium at the Grnwalder Stra?e. You can tour the Allianz Arena (the sparkling new stadium for the higher leagues), though, they have a tour in english at 1 p.m. each day.

What also might appeal to the kids (when the weather is nice) is a bike tour through the Englischer Garten (and beyond), you can rent bikes and tour on your own or join an organized bike tour. Also touring the city on the tram is a good way to see a lot.

When you visit Dachau try to find time to visit the old town and the palace of Dachau, only few people consider this, but it%26#39;s really worth it.

They have city tours of Munich on bicycles, since they are active.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! Our timing is not great for the sports it seems, but maybe it%26#39;s better to spend our time doing things they can%26#39;t do here at home. I%26#39;ve heard Mike%26#39;s bike tours are very good- any opinions on whether they would be appropriate for the family?

I think Rick Steves (from PBS) highly recommends that company. No time now but I%26#39;ll check my book when I get home from work today.

By the way, if you don%26#39;t have this Germany book, it%26#39;s a GREAT investment. Or just go to Barnes %26amp; Noble and take some notes.

You can%26#39;t go wrong with visiting the Deutsche Museum. The kids will love it, both your son and daughter. You may want to check beforehand which exhibits are open on what days.

If you take another side trip, the town of Garmisch (about 1 1/2 hrs south of Munich by train) also has an ice rink where the Olympics were held (I believe in the 1930s). Garmish is beautiful, in the Alps, and has a great gorge for hiking.

Marienplatz, Nyphenburg, Neuschwanstein... all good! Deutsche Museum is totally 5star!

Take the kids south to the mountains, especially to the Wendelstein- they can walk-up and down, or take the tram like the older folks. Its a whole day but really amazing! Plus, there%26#39;s a cool old restaurant on the way there, or back, called the Winkelstuberl (forgive the poor spelling!) that has all sorts of traditional stuff to eat... but even Wiener Scnitzel with frites if they aren%26#39;t adventurous!

Several years ago we were taken with the kids on a tour of a salt mine that dates back to Roman times... I can%26#39;t recall the name of the town, but we drove past Hitler%26#39;s mountain retreat... The kids adored the slides down to the huge underground caverns and lakes...
