Residenz: How Much Time?

How much time should one allocate for the Residenz to get a good overview for the first time?

We are in Munich for a short amount of time, but want to plan accordingly.

It is probably just me, but the tour (follow the arrows) seemed to go on forever. There were some very nice highlights but a lot of what we saw was redundant IMO. I started looking for a shortcut exit and found it.

Co-located with the Residenz was the treasury museum. The workmanship on the practical works of art there was quite amazing. That entrance ticket costs about the same as the Residenz. You can do it in less than 1/2 hour.

I am not into an abundance of overdecorated rooms, so you may want to ignore my views.

There%26#39;s an awful lot of rooms full of china... now if you like that sort of thing- fine! I spent an entire day there, NOT in the china suites! but because I was afraid to miss something significant. I only got about two-thirds of the way through! At the time I wanted to go back... But there%26#39;s so much else to see and do in Muenchen! Make sure you get to Nyphenburg!

Half the rooms are open in the AM and the other half in the PM but I would agree with Trikist - after awhile it all begins to look the same.

The Treasury is definitely worth the visit. Allow up to 3 hours max.

Well, I disagree with almost everybody. If you like to visit opulence and luxury from a period that lasted over 700 years, one day for the Residenz is not enough. If you get bored easily and don%26#39;t really care about the quality of workmanship and craftsmanship, three hours is plenty. For me, I go to the Residenz every time I go to Munich (at least once a year). I always discover something I haven%26#39;t seen before or at least to which I haven%26#39;t paid paid much attention.

Guides are available for purchase and I strongly advise it. The free audio guide is great, but if you listen to the whole guide, just the Schatzkammer (treasury) lasts 5 hours.

My best suggestion is to go early and tour the Schatzkammer first and then the Residenz morning tour. If you like it enough, come back after lunch and take the afternoon tour. Do NOT miss the Cuivilles Theater!

Now, to answer your question. Since you intimate that this will not be a one-time visit to Munich, I suggest a morning at the Residenz with the afternoon at the Pinakotheks (art museums). The following day see Nymphenburg Palace (summer palace of the Wittelsbachs) in the morning and the Deutsches Museum (one of the best in the world) in the afternoon. Another half day wandering through the old city should give you a good overview with lots to return to see when you have more time.

Hope this helps.
