We get to pick one Alp city...either Garmisch Partenkirchen or Mittenwald. We%26#39;ll probably be wandering shops, looking at architecture, Bavarian culture, etc. No hiking or sports. I know the cable to Zugspitz (sp?) is an option, but I%26#39;m sure both cities have lovely mountain views. And we%26#39;ll be staying one night (coming from Munich). I%26#39;ll leave it up to you all.....which city would you pick????

I%26#39;d pick Mittenwald because it%26#39;s smaller and easier to find your way around. There%26#39;s more to do in Garmisch, of course, since it%26#39;s bigger. They%26#39;re really close together, though, less than half an hour by train, so if you stayed in Mittenwald and got bored you could just hop on the train to Garmisch.

what about bertesgarten-near the austrian border that is quite spectacular.

Those are great options!! Here%26#39;s another problem...we were planning on traveling from alps to Fussen (for the castle) by train. On the map they look quite close together, yet the train has us going back through Munich...a rather long trip in all. Is there a more direct way of getting there? We are NOT renting a car...no one in our group wants to be the driver:)) We are trying to pick the right route and timing to be able to do Munich, Neuschwanstein, Garmisch %26amp; Mittenwald (and any other close by towns) and Salzburg, before taking a train to Prague. We don%26#39;t want to spend out entire time on a train, so picking the right order is important.

There are no direct trains between Garmisch (Mittenwald) and Fssen. However, you can take the train from Garmisch to Reutte (in Tirol) there change for a train to Pfronten-Weissbach and from there have a short bus ride to Fssen. The scenery is quite spectacular so it should be worth the effort. This should take you between 2,5-3 hours. If you are not adventurous there%26#39;s also a direct bus from Garmisch to Fssen (2 h).
And for your first question - do stay in Mittenwald as it is more of a genuine Bavarian town. It%26#39;s small but as you are only staying for one night there should be plenty to do. If the weather is clear, take tour with the Karwendelbahn.

Babe, have you considered spending the night in Fussen, a real quick bus ride from the castle. I personally prefer Fussen over the 2 places

For an excellent small hotel with an excellent close-up view of lit-up by night Neuschwanstein stay at the Villa Jaegerhaus in Hohenschwangau. Every room has a castle view, but some only of nextdoor Hohenschwangau palace. The central room one floor up facing Neuschwanstein is very nice, and the room nextdoor in the NE corner has views of both castles. You should be able to see the castles from your bed. There is no elevator, so you will have to walk up the one flight of stairs. (Why I recommend at least one floor up is that you can leave the curtains open at night for the view and with the lights out no one will be able to see into the room.)The restaurant in the associated hotel across the road is excellent. Don%26#39;t worry if you are unable to handle the interior of Neuschwanstein, it%26#39;s not that nice, but the exterior is gorgeous with the Alps immediately behind it and it%26#39;s nice to have the time to savor the views. For my review of this hotel, click on my name. Another reviewer has also taken some nice pictures of it.
