....we will be arriving on a Wednesday morning in late September, and we will be meeting up with our tour group on Friday afternoon. It%26#39;s been suggested that we take a train from Frankfurt airport to a nice village on the river for Wednesday and Thursday. I%26#39;ve read a little about Mainz and some about Bacharach...advise?
It%26#39;s just me and hubby, and this is our first visit to Germany. Our tour takes us to Heidelberg and on to Trendelburg and Rothenberg and Munich....

Hello twobluecats
I hope this isn%26#39;t too late to reply. I visited both Mainz and Bacharach recently. I am no expert but I can tell you that Mainz is big. It is a busy, pleasant city. Many nice buildings, but a little impersonal. Lots of shops and consumer stuff.
Bacharach in complete contrast is an unspoilt mediaeval small town. Very picturesque and easy to walk into the the countryside.
So the choice is yours depending on what you want. Big and bustling, or small and pretty.

Definitely Bacharach. The vineyards wil be turning color and there should be plenty of hekinwirtschaft or besenschaft open. Look for a tree branch or woven decoration with a light next to it indicating it%26#39;s open, and head on in for a limited but local menu and great wine tasting!

Hi twobluecats,
I would suggest Bacharach or any small village in one of the small side valleys for your stay. This area is in the autem really beautiful. You can visit one of the old castles or you can take a hike on the %26quot;Rhein-Burgen-Weg%26quot; a hiking trail along the hillside of the rhine.
Just take care, that your place to stay is not located directly next to the train.
Greets from Oberdiebach,
Christian

I agree with the above, last year we stayed in Bingen, St Goar, Bacharach, Oberwesel and Koblenz we also visited several of the other villages, you really can%26#39;t go wrong which ever on you choose all are gorgeous and a very relaxing start to the holiday. There will be wine festivals on in late september I%26#39;d contact the tourist information centres in one of the villages and see if there is one on while you are there. They are great fun and a lovely way to meet the locals
