Hello,
I am thinking of spending my long layover in Mainz instead of Frankfurt. I have read on other threads that it is easy to take the train from FRA right to the center of Mainz. So, I won%26#39;t have a car... I am interested in trying to do a wine tasting or visit one of the wine museums I have read about. It seems to me that most of the wineries are actually outside of town, so it would be difficult for me without a car. There is one I found that appears to be in central Mainz called Kupferberg. I saw that they have tastings and a wine museum. Problem is, their website is in German only so I can%26#39;t get any other information. Has anyone been there and can tell me if they are open daily to the public for tastings and to visit the museum, or do you have to be part of a tour? Or if you know of any other places I could go to without a car...
Thank you!

Hi, I have been visiting Mainz with friends for the past 10 years. We never take or need a car, everythingis within walking distance. Its a great place, lots of history, great places to eat and drink. It%26#39;s only about 20 mins from Frankfurt by local train. It%26#39;s an inexpensive place to stay. If your on a budget I would recommend the IBIS hotel (3 to 4 star rating- always been extremley clean with quality staff), and only 5 mins from Mainz center and the railway station at Mainz Sud. Try %26#39;Doctor Flutters%26#39; for local food and beer..we spend most of our evenings there as the food and atmosphere is great. We go to Kupferburg everytime we visit. Take the tour, you wont be disappointed. Its a bit cold, even in the summer as you are taken down and into the mountain side where the champagne is distilled and stored. Camera%26#39;s are allowed and worth taking. It%26#39;s the best and cheapest Champagene you will ever get,( about 3 euro a bottle.) We purchased 200 on the last visit in November 2007!! I hope this information is of some help. Have a great time.. Colin

%26gt; railway station at Mainz Sud.
Mainz Sd station was renamed to Mainz R?misches Theater as they found the remains of a Roman Theatre next to it.

I am currently visiting Mainz. Have been here since Sunday (today is Thursday). I was looking forward to the tour and tasting at Kupferberg. We took the 1 mile walk to the winery to find they were not giving tours that day. Even though the website I found stated they provided tours daily I would advise calling first to confirm days and times. We did walk around the building and the view is wonderful. Worth the walk. If you do not get to the Kupferberg don%26#39;t worry about not tasting some fantastic wine. Every place, and I mean every place we went had an outstanding selection of local wines. As for being here without a car, I am glad we do not have one. It would be a waste. You can walk and walk and walk. Today we are going to the Gutenburg Museum and an open air market (farmers market). There is plenty to do on foot. Tomorrow we leave for Koln.

Thank you all for the great information! It sounds like I will do just fine there without a car, and that the wine is plentiful!
