Is it silly to try to explore Germany on my own?

Hi,

Im travelling from the UK to Romania to work for one month during August. I am then doing an escorted tour around Ukraine and Moldova for two weeks. I am then planning to go from Ukraine to Prague to do another short tour around Eastern Europe (prague, krakow, hungary, austria, munich). This trip ends in Munich on 2/10/08 so I will get the opportunity to experience Oktoberfest.

If Im not completely exhausted after doing this amount of travel, I would really like to make the most of my time in Germany. I would like to explore as much of the country as I can. I would probably be able to spend upto two weeks in Germany. Will it be safe for me to travel around Germany alone? (I%26#39;m a 28yr old Aussie who cant speak German but of course will make the effort to learn the basics before i go there). Also, is there sufficient transport for me to be able to travel to most parts of Germany? Ive heard of something called the interail? I usually stick to escorted tours (as you can see) because of the safety factor. I have seen a couple of escorted tours on the net (trafalgar and globus) but they are very expensive and dont seem to spend anywhere near enough time in certain places.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you.

Fiona :o)

Germany is one of the safest and also most easy countries to travel around on your own.

German public transport is astounding! It runs on time, is clean, and goes everywhere you could ever want to get to!

If you look at the www.deutschebahn.de website (top right hand to turn it into English) you can find all sorts of information about destinations, costs, special offers and so on.

Also, Germany is a very safe country to travel in ~ I speak as a lone female traveller also. I have been robbed in a selection of European cities but never in Germany.

Have a great time!

I agree, exploring Germany on your own could be fun. Just remember to travel light as you%26#39;ll be carrying your own luggage. My first solo trip to Germany was when I was in my early 40s and I had a great time. Last summer I took my ten-year-old daughter. We went all around by train and bus, with one small rolling suitcase each, and had a wonderful time. Get a few guidebooks ahead of time, figure out what you want to see and do, and go for it.
