Day trip while in Berlin: Dresden or Weimar?

What do you think I should do? Thanks!

It depends on how long have you got and what are the chances of getting back to Europe any time - basically both cities deserve more than half a day (which is what you%26#39;ll have left after getting there and back).

I would take Dresden not only because of the proximity, but because I think it has much more to offer.

Better idea really would be to go to Potsdam if you can only spare a day.

Short train ride, loads of history. Includes Dutch Quarter, Russian colony, plus the palaces and parks.

I%26#39;ve visited Weimar and Potsdam but not Dresden but I do have a comment. Weimar was an important place for my wife and I because we are both history, philosophy, and music buffs. Weimar, for many, is the historical center of German culture with major sites devoted to Goethe, Schiller, Nietzsche, Liszt, and more. It%26#39;s also the birthplace of the Weimar republic which is, (in our humble opinion) one of the most important sites in world history. It%26#39;s also the birthplace of the famous German Bauhaus design school and movement. Near by, is also the Buchenwald concentration camp. And more and more and more.

This kind of stuff is very interesting to us ... more so than palaces, big monuments, and shopping. So Weimar was a perfect destination. If you are interested in such things, Weimar might be the best place.

P.S. it also seemed that Weimar is more of a destination for Germans as opposed to foreign tourists. It was nice in this way. Even in peak season, it didn%26#39;t feel uncomfortably crowded or over-run with gigantic tour groups from all parts of the globe.
