What to do in Cologne

Whilst in amsterdam (April) we are going to get the train to cologne for the day, could anyone advise on the walking distance from train station into the centre, and what to do whilst there. There will be 4 of us and 2 small children. Would we be able to get a Rhine cruise?

The main train station is edge-to-edge with the main sights, the Cologne Cathedral

You can make roundtrips on the Rhine in Cologne.

For the really interesting part of the Rhine you would have to travel 1-1,5 hrs south of Cologne.

Climb on the southern tower of the cathedral. If they are really young you have to carry them up, which is not without. This was for a short time the highest building on the planet.
