Hi
My family and I are planning to spend three days/four nights in the Rhine River region later this year. We%26#39;re hoping to explore Rheinfels Castle and a river cruise one day, visit Burg Eltz Castle and maybe explore the Mosel a little one day, and on the third day visit the Dom in Koln and then over to Aachen to see the Charlemagne sites.
Does this rough itinerary sound feasible without getting too rushed? We will have a car available to use. Any other sites or ideas you recommend in the area?
Also, a friend recommended the Schoenburg Castle Hotel and we are hoping to stay there one or two nights. Everything I find on it, including the reviews here, sound positive. Any other comments about it are welcome. For example, does it make a good base for exploring the region, or would you stay there one night only then move on to another town? We were thinking about St Goar for the other two or three nights. Bacharach also looks nice.
Many thanks for any advice or ideas you may have.

4 nights at Schoenburg would constitute a mighty big splurge on my budget. Also - it%26#39;s high on a cliff and quite remote from the town if you just want to take a stroll or shop. Might be better to head to St. Goar, which has a better location for the sights and of course is where Rheinfels can be found. Suggest also the falconry show at Burg Maus (cross the river on the ferry at St. Goar and drive north) and Marksburg Castle in Braubach (further north from Burg Maus.) Cochem is an attractive town for a meal after Burg Eltz. Trier is a good bit further up the Mosel but very worthwhile if you have the time. WW II museum in Remagen on the way to Cologne is a must-see.

Yes, staying at Schoenburg Castle is expensive. But on our 3 week European tour in 2001, this was our highlite, as well as our splurge. Stay 1 night, get there early, and enjoy every minute. You will feel like royalty!

I also think that one night in Schoenburg Castle is enough and then move to a different location for exploring the area.
You will definately enjoy your stay there (and yes get there early). It is a great hotel.
