Best things to see in Munich

My sister and I (18 and 20 years old) are spending 3 days in Munich during our first trip to Europe this summer. We are going with my Aunt and Uncle and 5 year old cousin.

We were wondering what the best things to see in Munich in such a short time are..

We definitely want to hit a beer hall (we%26#39;re legal in Europe-yay!) but otherwise, we want to keep it family friendly. We are both very into history (I am a European history major) and would love to see historical sights/great Bavarian architecture.

Also, any particular food/restaurants we should try to get the full Munich experience?

Also, how crowded is Munich in the summer? (Early August)

Since you%26#39;re a Euro History Major, I would highly recommend the Munchen Residenz, in the City Centre. Also, checkout the Augustiner Keller / Bier Halle on Arnulf str.

For sad history, go to Dachau (a suburb).

For fine arts, the 3 Pinakotheks; and the science museum for the budding engineers.

For full Munich experience, how about sunbathing in the English Garden?

In summer, esp August, like any other European cities, the locals are gone for their vacations, the crowds are tourists.

Not so true as for example Rome or Paris. Contrary to some other countries Germans take their vacations some time during the summer, the vacation period is not packed into one single month. There will be less business travellers and more tourists, so it will be more or less as always.

Strictly seen an independent town (actually a really nice one) close to Munich.

Dachau memorial site is not a place where I would take a 5 year old with me.

Some tourist related things maybe more crowded than at other times of the year. But generally the city is less crowded in summer.

For hostels it%26#39;s a peak period. For hotels not. There is no bigger German city where the tourists make up for the fewer business travelers in summer.

In summer go the beer gardens, they are also more family friendly (e.g. some with playgrounds etc.).

e.g. the Hirschgarten, the largest beer garden, has several playgrounds, deers (= Hirsch) of course, ...
