Notable things to see in Fussen

We plan to see Neuschwanstein on our trip to Bavaria, and we want to either stay in Fussen or stop over there for an afternoon.

Any places you would recommend seeing or restaurants to eat at?

Our group includes my sister and I (18 and 20 yrs old--not your typical partying college students though, we%26#39;re into seeing historical stuff), my Aunt and Uncle and my 5 year old cousin.

Hi,

Historical... be sure to tour Hohenschwangau next to Neuschwanstein, Ludwig%26#39;s boyhood home.

For non-historical fun take the Tegelbergbahn (cable car) and ride the luge (sommerrodelbahn) just 1 mile from Neuschwanstein.

A restaurant that is supposed to be really good is the %26quot;Mozartwirt%26quot; in Badseeweg 5, 87629 Fssen / Bad Faulenbach.

Have a look at their website:

www.mozartwirt.de

It%26#39;s only in German but you should at least be able to get an impression. They don%26#39;t have a menue on their website because the dishes change about every 2-3 days.

I would stay at the excellent very small hotel Villa Jaegerhaus in Hohenschwangau (former hunting lodge)which has nice close up views of lit-up by night Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Palaces (our favorite hotel in Germany). All rooms have palace views, so be sure to get one that has a Neuschwanstein view and not of only nextdoor Hohenschwangau. Some corner rooms have views of both. The restaurant in the associated hotel across the road, Lisl, has excellent food and they also do a lot of flaming dishes. They also have package deals including entrance fees to the palaces. Click on my name to see my review, an another reviewer has also taken some nice pictures. If you stay there, head for a short distance in the direction away from Neuschwanstein for a pleasant small lake.

The Ludwig musical in Fuessen is a nice way to spend an evening, albeit an expensive one.

St. Coloman church by Schwangau is a top rated attraction, more so than the often mentioned Wieskirche.

Apart from the normal things like a castle, some nice churches and other buildings they have also a branch gallery of the Bavarian State Gallery. And a Festspielhaus (~ musical theatre) with 1400 places.

In addition to all that has been mentioned, It is a beautiful natural area with mountains, rivers and alpine lakes. I best enjoyed visiting the area for the walks with the views of the castles from many vantage points.

Fssen castle houses the local museum and is the genuine article, an ancient castle not the nineteenth-century versions of Ludwig et al. Wevenjoyed our visit a lot.

The town itself is very pretty too.
