Appropriate Attire in Germany

We will be visiting Germany this summer between 6/7-6/21. Since the climate can vary from summer to summer, I am assuming that it will range from 75-85 degrees F. and possibly be humid. I plan to pack jeans, a couple of skirts and a couple of capris. We don%26#39;t %26quot;dress up%26quot; when we vacation because we like to eat in casual restaurants. Is it appropriate to wear capris in the following places?

** Mosel Valley

** Baden Baden

** Rothenburg

** Pinswang

** Salzburg

** Munich

I would appreciate any advice or suggestions for packing (clothes, shoes, etc). My husband and I never check in luggage, as we pack very lightly when we travel.

Thanks!

I think that the high temperatures will vary from 60-100F, and it can possibly get below 50F at night. These temperatures are typical away from the mountains. My advice to anyone traveling to Germany in any season is to think of layering, as in any season there can be quite a bit of temperature variation. Whatever you wear should be fine. However, the only people I ever see wearing shorter shorts are tourists.

In the Mosel river valley and in Rothenburg there are mainly tourists which is why you%26#39;ll see just any attire form shorts, t-shirts and sandals (Europeans don%26#39;t wear socks with sandals!) to Khakis and Polo shirts.

You will find that people in Baden Baden dress much, much better. It%26#39;s a rich city packed with rich retired people and the dress code is accordingly.

Munich and Salzburg are big cities where obviously you%26#39;ll find anything from American tourist with shorts and socks in sandals to local business people in Chanel dresses and Armani suits...

The first place that I ever saw socks being worn with sandals (Birkenstocks) was in Germany. It was years ago when the Hippie movement was just on the wane.

Evidently, it is still open to discussion in Germany, though not to everyone%26#39;s delight:

LOL - where we live (Costa Rica) is is quite easy to discern who is from the US and who is from the EU (or more specifically, from Germany).

Those with socks and sandals are ALWAYS from the EU...

Women%26#39;s haircuts, colored eye glass frames, and shorts with last decade%26#39;s fashionable length also make great ID references. It%26#39;s fairly entertaining once you get the hang of it.

Cultural stereotypes can be quite funny. :-)

Back to the OP: You%26#39;ll be fine wearing whatever you want - although my wife keeps complaining that German women dress decidedly %26quot;non-feminine.%26quot; And she is right (in my humble estimation), female fashion in Germany is much more androgynous than in many parts of the US, the EU, or back here in Latin America.

I too thought socks with sandals was a German thing (though some Brits do it too). certainly not EU thing wholesale. Spaniards actually tend not to wear sandals, going more for loafers/ deck-shoes and certainly no socks.

Short shorts when seen here in the city are worn almost exclusively by Americans I would say.

While temps in Germany may get up to what you think, that wd be the optimitic maximnum for June, I%26#39;d reckon, and you have to think it will cool down later on in the day.

Layers has to be the way to go. Rainjacket to be included too. Last July was cool (certainly under 75oF) and wet in Germany, so who knows what this June will be like (I%26#39;ve been in Berlin early June with overnight temps under 50oF!
