Munich to where? To Ski

My husband and I will be in Munich March 5th-13th.

We will be staying at the Fleming Hotel Center City for the first 5 nights then we wanted to take a train somewhere snow would be and return to Munich on the 13th and on to the airport.

Any ideas?

Also how is the weather there in early march?

Thank YOU!

Everybody else will tell you to head south, but there is an alternative! Head North East to the Bavarian Forest. You can ski here on the Great Arber, location for World Cup races the first weekend in March. www.arber.de The village of Bayerisch Eisenstein is the best base, right on the border with the Czech Republic. At the moment, we have blue skies and bright sunshine but cold at night.

Skiing at the Arber and the Bayerischer Wald is certainly nice (plus, you%26#39;ll have a shorter trip to reach the airport), but it really depends on what you want from a skiing resort and whether you%26#39;re advanced skiers or beginners, and whether you want to see the alps up close or are happy with the rather-not-so high Bayerischer Wald. Oh, and if you%26#39;re party people or rather want it quiet and relaxed. I%26#39;ve been to quite a lot of alpine skiing resorts over the years, if you could specify what you%26#39;re looking for my (and others) advice would be more to the point.

Plus, the train gets you faster to the alps than to the Bayerischer Wald.

You could go to one of the skiing resorts in Austria like

Ischgl

Obertauern

Zell am See

Soelden

Arlberg area

At that time of the year you have to take into consideration that snow will probably only be guaranteed in skiing resorts on a higher elevation or with a glacier nearby!

WELL thank you for the replies. As for going to ski.

I%26#39;ve never even put on a pair of ski%26#39;s! So it will be quite the entertainment if nothing more!

SO the Arbor? would be a good place for me to learn and a shorter trip back to the airport via train?

Can I rent ski clothes? If so how much do they run?

Thank You

One other thing

Would Switzerland be too far to go by train for 3 nights and be able to return to the munich airport by noon on March 13th?

While the Bayerischer Wald is a possibility, it%26#39;s not known for the most reliable snow conditions in March. If conditions are poor, you are more or less stuck. You probably should to go somewhere where, if conditions are poor, you have some additional options. A bit over one hour by train from Munich is Garmisch-Partenkirchen. You can use the EUR 27 Bayernkarte for both of you to get there. In G-P, the Zugspitze will always have snow in March, as will proably also have the Kreuzeck. Another option is the Kitzsteinhorn glacier near Kaprun (close to Zell am See). Chances are good, that the Schmittenhoehe right in Zell am See will also still have decent skiing. The Nebelhorn in Oberstdorf, about 2 hrs. by train is another option.

Garmisch,Zell am See and Oberstdorf have plenty of lodging opportunities.

|||

Well, you really don%26#39;t need one of the super-large ski resorts then. Garmisch is an option, but snow conditions are not so hot at the moment, esp. for the beginners slopes. Same goes for Lenggries/Kreuzeck, nice slopes, but not very high elevation.

I think good options for you would be Zell am See/Austria or Axamer Lizum/Austria, which is near Innsbruck and has a ski bus service from Innsbruck train station and several Innsbruck Hotels, maybe check this out

www.skihotels-innsbruck.at/english/index.html

You could do a scenic train trip Munich-Innsbruck, have a look at the Deutsche Bahn website www.bahn.de and select a trip Mnchen to Innsbruck via Mittenwald (there are other routes, too, but this one is best in terms of views)

Switzerland is quite a bit further off the track, you%26#39;ve got better options nearer to Munich and Austria also has the Euro.

One of the nicer ski/winter resorts and charming Alpine villages in the world is St.Anton am Arlberg, which is about a 2.5 hour train ride (please correct if I%26#39;m wrong, Munich forumers).

Why would this be better than Garmisch, Zell am See, Axamer Lizum or Kitzbuehel?

You%26#39;d have a higher likelihood of snow, one of the best selections of slopes you%26#39;ll find worldwide and the town of St.Anton is in the Champions League of Alpine ski towns(along with Zermatt, St.Moritz, Chamonix).

Snow conditions could certainly change within the next 3 weeks... I think Gr. Arber is a very good recommendation. Also, I used to love skiing at Obertsdorf.

There is almost ALWAYS snow in the Tyrol Mountain glacier areas. I have skied 50 times at: Hintertux, Austria... Nice place!
