We are planning on heading from Salzburg into Garmisch area and then up to Munich this summer/fall.
My original thought was to go to Berchtesgaden on the way to Garmisch, spend the night in Garmisch and then go to Linderhof on way to Munich.
Now I am second guessing and thinking we might just skip Berchtesgaden. We are going to do salt mines/luge slides in Austria. Besides the great view, is Eagle%26#39;s Nest worth the trip? If we skipped it, we would probably do Linderhof on the way to Garmisch and then head straight to Munich the following day and have more time there.
Any opinions?
Thanks!

Since going to Linderhof from Salzburg is only possible by car, you might as well go by way of Berchtesgaden. The drive from Salzburg to B%26#39;gdn. is short. If you want to get to the top of the Eagle%26#39;s Nest you should alllow about 3-4 hours, considering that you may have to wait at the Obersalzburg for the elevator which in turn takes you to the mountain top restaurant
On a clear day the view from there is great. On a day without view, skip it.
From B%26#39;gdn. the trip to Garmisch takes about 3 hours and , again, it is very scenic (if the weather cooperates) So, perhaps you want to keep your options open. On a clear day, drive to B%26#39;gdn, visit the Eagle%26#39;s Nest and then drive to Garmisch. Otherwise, drive to Garmisch the quickest way.
Suggested routings: At the Austro-German border between Salzburg and B%26#39;gdn. get on the B-305. Before you get to Berchtesgaden , look for the signs to the Rossfeld Hochstrasse or Hoehenstrasse, the road is on your left. It is a short cut to the Obersalzberg. If you miss it, keep going on the B305 to the B%26#39;gdn RR station, there are signs to the Obersalzberg.
After the Eeagle%26#39;s Nest, go back to the Bg%26#39;dn RR station and pick up the B-305. It is part of the Alpenstrasse Network (Alpine Highway Network). Take it to Reit im Winkel. (Watch, about 5km after Weissbach the B-305 turns left. You DON%26#39;t want to go to Inzell on the B306)
In Reit im Winkel, head through the village for the Austrian border; the signs read Koessen. You are now on the Austrian B-172. Take it until you get to the Autobahn to Innsbruck (German A-93/Austrian A-12). Take the A-12 (Don%26#39;t foget the vignette -decal) past Innbruck to the Exit for Zirl. From there take the Austrian B-177/German B-2 to Mittenwald and Garmisch Partenkirchen.
If the weather is not gret, go from Salzburg on the A-8 to the Irschenberg Exit #99, and take the B-472 to Miesbach, Bad Toelz and on to the A-95 coming from Munich.

As previous stated, Berchtesgaden is only a few kilometers (miles) from Salzburg. One place that I would be sure to visit is the ice caves at Werfen south of Salzburg. It should be something you remember fondly the rest of your life!

Hi,
%26quot;we would probably do Linderhof on the way to Garmisch%26quot;
Linderhof is not on the way to Garmisch from Salzburg.
It%26#39;s between Fuessen and Garmisch.
Your original plan would be more correct.
Berchtesgaden is less than 30 minutes %26quot;on the way%26quot; from Salzburg.
From Garmisch heading to Munich, an excellent place to take a break is Andechs Monestary. Gorgeous church and beer gardens.
