Getting around in Berlin

Hello. I am coming to Berlin for the first time and will be staying in Western Kreuzberg, Hallesches ufer.

I was hoping to stay in a neighborhood where you can walk to fun stuff. I see some things in w kreuzberg, but more in Friedrichstain. Is it easy to take the U from one place to another? It looks like according to my map they are connected via rail.

I agree that the best way to experience a city is through strolling around, through your feet. And Berlin is perfect for this - it is not very hilly and very easy to navigate.

The area around Hallesches Ufer has enough interesting places to go to, also without going to Friedrichshain, especially around Bergamannstrasse and Gnaisenaustrasse.

However, it is also - as you said yourself - fairly easy to get to Friedrichshain. The U train (which is in this area in fact above the ground) goes all the way to Warschauer Strasse; and besides, Bus 140 from the Bergmannstrasse %26quot;kiez%26quot; would take you all the way to Ostbahnhof.

Berlin is quite widespread.

Taking the U-Bahn is easy.

Best is to buy day tickets for local public transport (EUR 6,10). They cover

- regional trains (RB, RE)

- S-Bahn

- U-Bahn (metro)

- trams

- buses

and even some ferries

No U-Bahn. Either RE or S-Bahn. RE trains are faster (they stop less often), but if the next train is a S-Bahn it makes not really sense to wait for the next RE train.
