We are cruising into Hamburg in June and have 12 hours off boat. We want to go to Berlin but unless I am doing something wrong on their website, the ICE Bullet train tickets are $500 US dollars for a couple round trip? Is this right? If so any other way to buy these cheaper? Or any suggestions - private tour and pay a driver? Thanks.

Hi Rob,
you can get the ticket for half the price. Just look at www.bahn.de, just click English version. They have always special offers, just book well in advance (up to 3 month), because the offer is limited to a certain amount of seats.
At least a third of your journey will be spent for transport, even if the train is on time (which isnt always the case).
How about spending your 12 hours in Hamburg only? Have a look at their website www.hamburg.de. You will enjoy it, I promise.

12 hours is not much for Hamburg and even less for Berlin.

Berlin is not really rewarding for a too short visit. Unlike other capital cities it was never built to impress visitors on first sight.
Time wise the ICE trains are your only option. All other means of transport will take too long.
If you book in advance you can get discounted tickets.
But you can only book 89 days in advance.

I think it would be more reasonable to visit Hamburg (Germany%26#39;s second largest city), or if you must leave it, the nearby nice Hanseatic town of Luebeck. If you do either, at least you will have time to see the main sights and it will be much cheaper.

Thanks. You are probably right. The travel company offers a 12 hour tour of Berlin including the ICE train, city tour, dinner cruise and some photo stops for $369 a person US. $740 for my wife and I in a day is a lot. Anyone know any good private tour guys for Hamburg?
