Car or Train around Germany

Hi all. My family of 6 is planning a trip to Germany lasting 12 days in late April/early May. We land and depart from Frankfurt Airport.

As of now the plan is to visit the Rhine for 2 days, Cologne for 1 day. Then to Berlin and Potsdam for 3 days. We then plan to travel to Munich via Dresden and Nurnberg while seeing the Dachau. This will be done over 1.5 days. We will stay in Munich for 2 nights. Following which i am planning to go Fussen for 1 day. Our next stop is Rothenburg then Heidelburg then back to Frankfurt.

Is this plan feasible? Our plan was to use the car throughout as it is more economical but are there any times where we should leave the car?

For your information, the world%26#39;s largest Spring beer festival is in Stuttgart from 12Apr to 4May, www.stuttgarter-fruehlingsfest.de www.stuttgart-tourist.de . Besides the large beer tents and their traditional entertainment, there are many rides some more typical of a large amusement park.

You seem to be doing a lot of traveling all over Germany. You could spend your vacation in one spot and around it without running out of excellent things to see and do. With over 30,000 castles and palaces alone in Germany, you can see there isn%26#39;t a scarcity of places to visit. It%26#39;s impossible to see it all, and the grass isn%26#39;t greener on the other side of the fence.

As to your train vs. car question, the train is fine for going from city to city if you don%26#39;t want to stop and visit places between them, and the cities have excellent public transportation. Traveling by car is best to visit more rural areas and sights, and I believe Germany%26#39;s best sights are mainly in the more rural areas.

A bit cramped but otherwise a good itinerary.

%26gt; any times where we should leave the car?

e.g. for getting around in the big cities

Berlin (zones AB)

day ticket EUR 6,10

mini group (up to 5 persons) EUR 15,40

Berlin + Potsdam (zones ABC)

day ticket EUR 6,30

mini group (up to 5 persons) EUR 15,60

Munich (MVV inner district)

day ticket EUR 5,00

mini group (up to 5 persons) EUR 9,00

Munich + Dachau (MVV Munich XXL)

day ticket EUR 6,70

mini group (up to 5 persons) EUR 11,80

Parking will be often more expensive. And you have a) first find a place for your car b) have to return to this place later. Here public transport is more flexible and faster.

The above is assuming

adults: 6

children 6-14: 0

children 0-5: 0

Thanks Marcopolko and Abalada for your replies.

Will consider abandoning the car and taking public transportation within Berlin and Germany.

Would also like to ask what is the average parking rates in Germany. Thanks

this makes sens

%26gt; and Germany

this would only make sense if 4 out of the 6 are younger than 15 years

From 0,20 - 4,00 Euro per hour. Depends really where. There are even big differences inside a single city.
