First time visitors to Berlin

Hi all,

My boyfriend and I are taking a whistle stop tour of berlin over the august bank holiday.

We don%26#39;t arrive until midnight on friday and leave at 10am on monday, so we%26#39;ve only got 2 days.

We want to do the free tour with Brewers, some shopping and go to the chocolate shop (can%26#39;t remember what its called, but they have a titanic replica, unfortunalty not life-size)

What else do you reconnmned.

We are both young and active and are staying at the Swissotel in Ku%26#39;damn.

Thanks!

A day and a bit to fit the rest in. Bit of a tall order!

What are your interests? Left-hand column here has things to do; look at that to get you started.

DK Top 10 Berlin lists their choice of top ten attractions (not mine but there you go). However also very good for pages of themed ideas to suit your interests.

Other titles like %26quot;city break%26quot; or %26quot;weekend in....%26quot; wd also help you narrow it down. Check out your local library or Smith%26#39;s.

To see many of Berlin%26#39;s sights you might want to take a trip with a bus. The %26quot;100%26quot; and %26quot;200%26quot; are regular lines of the BVG and they start at the %26quot;Bahnhof Zoo%26quot;. They cover sights as the %26quot;Siegess?ule%26quot;, %26quot;Reichstag%26quot;, %26quot;Brandenburger Tor%26quot;, %26quot;Potsdamer Platz%26quot; and %26quot;Alexander Platz%26quot;. You can also rent bikes with a small motor at several locations throughout the city. Or you could take a trip with a %26quot;Velo-Taxi%26quot; which is a bit expensive and bumpy.

For the shopping, please note that most shops at the Ku%26#39;Damm area are closing at 8:00 p.m.. The Ku%26#39;Damm is a bit overrated in my opinion. The KaDeWe is nice (be there early it get%26#39;s crowded very fast on Saturdays), but else there are only chains like H%26amp;M like anywhere else in Europe. There are also great shops at Friedrichsstrasse such as the Galries Lafayette and the Quartier 206 eventhough they are very pricey

The Chocolateer shop with Titanic + other chocolate sculptures is across the road from the Hilton in the Mitte area.

In the immediate vacinity you have the Berliner Dome, French Cathedral + Gendarmenmarkt. You are close to Freidichstrasse (sp?) with designer shops - with designer prices !

In Christmas 2006 we stayed at the Hilton - your hotel is @ 4miles away in West Berlin. Probably easy by public transport - or a pleasant (if lengthy) walk through central Berlin.

The chocolate shop is called Fa?bender %26amp; Rausch at Gendarmenmarkt. :-)

My favourite sighst in Berlin are Gendarmenmarkt, Berliner Dom, Schlo? (Palace) Charlottenburg, Zitadelle Spandau, Pfaueninsel.

Not far from your hotel you%26#39;ll find two nice areas with nice bars and restaurants. You could check out the area around Savignyplatz and the area around Winterfeldplatz.

Sunday is a nice day to have a nice breakfast brunch in one of the many cafes. A nice farmers market worth visiting is the one on Saturdays at Winterfeldplatz.

2 days is plenty to do this city or any other because you%26#39;ll want a rest after 2 days and if you really like it you can come back another time. Its a mistake to cram too much in. Think about how you are going to spend your evenings. What is right for you depends on your personal tastes: I like classical music concerts but you will doubtless have other tastes. I think its a good idea to watch a concert (pop, jazz, whatever) in the evening because you can relax in the theatre after your busy day. I usually go for a quickish meal near the concert hall/theatre beforehand. Do you really want to go shopping in Berlin? I think there are much better and more fun ways to spend your time and you can shop anywhere: most of what you buy these days is made in China anyway! Buy the Rough Guide to Berlin from Amazon or any other bookshop and you will certainly find no end of really unusual things to do in Berlin. Berlin really caters for every taste however bizarre, so make the most of your time there.
