Very preliminary stages of a trip way out of our box!
We will again be traveling to Ireland and thought, %26#39;hey, while out this way...lets see something else, something new, and really outside our %26#39;know alot about it comfort zone.%26quot;
We have decided to drive and experience the Romantic Road. We then thought....hmmmm, we%26#39;ve got some more time, why not go into Austria as well.
Because we are VERY preliminary, and awaiting our travel books (recently ordered), here are a few, probably awfully...%26quot;YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS KAREN!%26quot; questions.
1. How many days would you schedule for the Romantic Road to do it at a leisurely, yet not slow, pace.
2. How many hours would it be into Austria.
3. What should we not miss if we only have 4 days in Austria?
We will be flying Ryanair from Dublin into Frankfurt for .o1 Euro (plus taxes, of course), where should we fly back into Dublin from? Back in Franfurt, or somewhere in Austria???
4. Any %26#39;off the beaten track%26#39; things (local crafts, etc) that we should be on the look out for.
5. Driving in Germany/Austria...any harder than driving in the UK?
6. A great b%26amp;b at reasonable cost in Frankfurt and along the Romantic Road.
Thank any and all for any suggestions, or ideas on what we should and could be doing to prepare ourselves. Getting the travel books, have just taken out all the library%26#39;s travel video/dvds.
Something new and totally different...I%26#39;m hyped.
Thanks in advance for any and ALL help, guidance, or gentle shove in the right direction.

%26gt;1. How many days would you schedule for the Romantic Road to do it at a leisurely, yet not slow, pace.
It depends. I think you know already that there is nothing inherently romantic with the road itself - iot passes through many well-preserved, medieval small towns such as Rothenburg (very touristy), but also Dinkelsbhl, Pappenheim... and all the way down to Landsberg and Fssen. From north to south the landscape settings, the architecture and so on changes. You can do it in 2 day or in a week, depending on how much details you want.
2. How many hours would it be into Austria.
From where? To where in Austria?
3. What should we not miss if we only have 4 days in Austria?
Another impossible to answer question. What are your interests? Mountains? Medieval towns? Big vibrant cities?
%26gt;We will be flying Ryanair from Dublin into Frankfurt for .o1 Euro (plus taxes, of course),
No, you wont. You will be flying into Hahn, which is about 120 km northwest of Frankfurt. It is one of the most blatant misnomers Ryanair gives the airports it uses.
%26gt;where should we fly back into Dublin from? Back in Franfurt, or somewhere in Austria???
If there are flights from Salzburg or Innsbruck to Dublin, why not from there?
5. Driving in Germany/Austria...any harder than driving in the UK?
How hard is it for you driving on the other side of the road?
OTOH the roads are usually much better (wider, better graded etc.) than in Ireland, so this might make it easier again.
6. A great b%26amp;b at reasonable cost in Frankfurt and along the Romantic Road.
Sorry, cant help - but I recommend going to the websites of the towns you want to visit (usually
www.[town name].de) and clck on %26quot;accomodation%26quot; or %26quot;tourism%26quot; or similar.

The southern end of the RR in Fssen is about 2 km from the border to austria, so it%26#39;s rather minutes than hours. From Reutte via Fernpa? to Seefeld and Innsbruck to Berchtesgaden (K?nigssee) and Salzburg is about 300 km, a scenic trip , certainly more relaxing in 2-3 than in 1 day. A flight back from Salzburg would be ideal.
The german/austrian alpine area is famous for woodcarvings as a local craft, nativity scenes and such, don%26#39;t know whether you%26#39;re into that. Ah, and they distill lots of local schnaps round there or really weird herb liquors (e.g. Enzian or B?rwurz, brrrrr).

1. How many days would you schedule for the Romantic Road to do it at a leisurely, yet not slow, pace.
2-3 days
2. How many hours would it be into Austria.
The Romantic Road ends just a few meters before Austria. If you don%26#39;t break sharply you maybe in Austria (without noticing it).
3. What should we not miss if we only have 4 days in Austria?
I would travel in this time along the German/Austria border to Salzburg and a flight back from there.

4. Any %26#39;off the beaten track%26#39; things (local crafts, etc) that we should be on the look out for.
And as you%26#39;re landing in Hahn, some 125 km west of Frankfurt I would change the route a bit.
Hahn
Speyer (already kind off the beaten track - as far this is possible for an UNESCO world heritage site)
www.speyer.de/de/tourist/sehenswert
Heidelberg
heidelberg-marketing.de/content/index_eng.ht
Castle Road from Heidelberg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber
www.burgenstrasse.de/showpage.php
Get a good road map (in Germany) which has the scenic routes and highlights marked. There is a lot to discover off the beaten track.
5. Driving in Germany/Austria...any harder than driving in the UK?
No.
But keep in mind that to use Austrian autobahns you need a vignette (sticker). With the suggested itinerary you won%26#39;t have to use any autobahn in Austria.
6. A great b%26amp;b at reasonable cost in Frankfurt and along the Romantic Road.
Apart from skipping Frankfurt completely as it%26#39;s not really on the route, the best source for b%26amp;b are as already mentioned the homepages of the towns or their tourist offices. Mostly listed under private accommodation or private rooms. If there is not enough information in English just mail them. Please note that b%26amp;b is often just %26quot;b%26quot; in Germany.
Or just look for %26quot;Zimmer frei%26quot; (~ room(s) to let) signs. If you%26#39;re there in time before the tourist offices close you can also use their help. With a car you should have no problem to find a place to stay. If not in A than in nearby B or C.
