Munich/Austria/Prague Itinerary?

My wife and I are trying to plan a trip to the region in April (yes, it%26#39;s rather a last minute trip!) We are very flexible with dates all throughout the month and neither of us has been here before. Do you recommend a particular time in April? I%26#39;m guessing later in the month is nicer weather.

I would like to see Munich (possibly Neuschwanstein or Regensburg as well that would take up the 3rd day). My wife very much wants to visit Prague. We thought we might be able to do 1 day in Salzburg and 2 days in Vienna combined with 3 days each in Munich and Prague.

If our time is limited to 10 days of touring (not including air travel from USA), do you think this is a decent itinerary or our we stretching ourselves?

Is traveling by train the best option and would you recommend buying a Eurorail pass or not? It doesn%26#39;t actually seem to be cost effective especially when looking at traveling to Prague (option doesn%26#39;t seem available for multi-country passes). We would also be fine with renting a car, but I%26#39;m unsure if we could rent one to use in all countries nor whether it%26#39;s reasonable. (I admit I haven%26#39;t researched this much yet!)

We are really not familiar with rail travel in central Europe and are wondering if this is just too much to do as well. I%26#39;ve tried to plan it out given rail times and it seems okay, but having never visited the region, I am a bit skeptical of my own research!

Any recommendations? Thanks very much!

A trip Munich-Salzburg-Vienna- Prague would be easily doable by train - very good connections. Look here:

oebb.at/pv/index.jsp

There are also special train passes which would make the trip cheaper.

Visiting Neuschwanstein would be more difficult by public transport as it is a bit out of the way.

For a 10 day trip:

1 arrive in Munich

2 Munich

3 Munich

4 to Salzburg

5 Salzburg

6 to Vienna

7 Vienna

8 to Prague

9 Prague

10 back to Munich

2 days for Vienna and Prague are very short - would be good to add at least one day in each city!

No problem to visit Neuschwanstein by public transport.

DB timetable

From: Munich

To: Hohenschwangau

A good deal in Bavaria is the Bavaria Ticket. A day ticket covering all regional trains in Bavaria. Plus nearly all other local public transport, e.g. the buses from Fssen to Hohenschwangau. Or the U-Bahn (metro), trams and buses in Munich. EUR 27,00 for 2-5 persons.

Validity

Mo-Fr from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,So from midnight till 3am next day

The Bavaria Ticket covers also the regional trains to Salzburg. To be on the safe side you can select at the DB timetable as means of transport %26quot;only local transport%26quot;. Than only connections you can use with the Bavaria Ticket will be shown.

Prague to Munich (Airport)

Buy when in Munich a Bayern-B?hmen-Ticket (Bavaria-Bohemia-Ticket) for the date you plan to travel from Prague to Munich. Similar like the Bavaria Ticket but covers also the Bohemian border region. EUR 32,00 for 2-5 persons. Buy in Prague normal tickets to Plzen/Pilsen (CZK 145 ~ EUR 5,60 pp). From Plzen/Pilsen on you can use the Bavaria-Bohemia-Ticket you bought in Munich.

If you want to see Regensburg - it%26#39;s on the route from Prague to Munich. You could also stay in Regensburg or Freising and make it from there directly to Munich Airport. Via Munich itself would be quite a detour.

Ulrike and Alabada,

Thanks so much for this info! I%26#39;m feeling much more confident about planning this trip thanks to you both.

I may have some more questions in the coming days, but you%26#39;ve certainly helped me get started.

Danke!
