Help with itinerary for 2 week trip from Frankfurt

My husband and I have 2 weeks to spend traveling in Germany and environs. We will fly into Frankfurt in mid April. Wed like to rent a car and see Munich and Prague and the Black Forest area. We enjoy seeing picturesque small towns and wonderful cities like Prague. We were thinking of staying in an apartment in Prague for 1 week and doing some day trips. Is this too long in one spot? Any suggestions? Some must see small towns?

One week in Prague is too long, especially if you want to see Munich and the Black Forest. Prague for three, maybe four, full days is sufficient.

Kutna Hora is a UNESCO town. I recommend seeing it via a tour guide you can get in Prague. Ceske Krumlov is also very nice, for an overnight.

Prague is overrun with tourists. Be prepared. You might want to see the St. Charles Bridge in the early dawn to get a sense...

There are so many nice spots. The Loreley Valley is very beautiful and not far from Frankfurt. Prague is very nice as well but I wouldnt stay an entire week there. Innsbruck in Austria is nice as well.

I will send you a website that might be able to help you with a route and specially with a car since alot of car rental companies don%26#39;t allow you to take the car into eastern europe (and if they do they charge alot for it).

Thanks for the suggestions and the car info Sarah. Do you think we should rent a car for the 2 weeks or would a combination of car and train be better? Will Prague be overrun with tourists even in mid April?

I was in Prague on a cold, windy and rainy late November day and even then it was me plus half a million of other people on St. Charles%26#39; bridge. When we visited the castle on the top of the hill it felt like walking thru an airport when it%26#39;s closed down completely due to a snow storm. I don%26#39;t have a single picture with no other person in it.

However, it%26#39;s not all that bad in the side streets of the old town where a glass of beer still is around 1 compared to 5 (for the same size/same brand) on the main square and in main streets. I wonder how the locals cope with it...

The world%26#39;s largest Spring beer festival is in Stuttgart 12April-4May, Fruehlingsfest, www.stuttgarter-fruehlingsfest.de www.stuttgart-tourist.de . Nearby is the lovely old college town of Tuebingen with its hilly cobblestone streets, Esslingen with its well preserved medieval center, and Ludwigsburg with Germany%26#39;s largest perfectly preserved Baroque Palace.

I think Prague will be busy even in April. There are good public transportation systems within Germany, but I personally prefer to have a car to get around specially if trying to get to different places.

|||

What about getting from Germany to Prague? Is it too expensive to take a car there?

|||

There is no extra charge for taking a rental car to the Czech Republic as long as you don%26#39;t drop it off over there. But you must let them know upon pick up of your car as for insurance reasons they then can%26#39;t give you a Mercedes, BMW or Audi. You%26#39;ll then end up driving a Ford, Opel, Skoda, Seat or any other fine European brand.

|||

Most big car rental companies actually do quote in their contracts that you are anot allowed to take the car into eastern european countries. They do allow you to take some lets say not so popular cars over there but as far as I know most of them increase the price for the rental for this (you need approval from the rental company to actually take it over there).
