Getting from Warnemuende to Berlin

Our cruise line has just indicated it has discontinued its shore excursions which included transportation from Warnemuende to Berlin except those by expensive!! private car. What I ask for on behalf of our group of ten is an idiot-proof description on the best way to get from Warnemuende to Berlin (either Kurfurstendamm/corner Rankestrasse or Alexanderplatz)on a Saturday in July of 2008. Our ship arrives at 8:00 a.m. and departs at 9:00 p.m. Optimally I would like to learn the step-by-step (whatever seems obvious these days tends to not be) procedures for getting a train and/or a bus after getting off the ship and the approximate schedules and costs associated with this round trip endeavor. Anyone up to the challenge? Thanx.

... for a very good reason - such a visit does not make sense!

If you want to go to Berlin, you need a few days to discover it. Just racing through the city leaves you with a vague impression of a lot of houses and nothing more. If you have just one day, consider one of the historical towns at the Baltic coast such as Rostock.

A train trip from Warnemnde to Rostock takes about 20 min.

The train from Rostock to Lutherstadt-Wittenberg goes through Berlin. It runs pretty regularly but takes between 2 hrs 45 mins to almost 4 hours.

Like Altamiro, I don%26#39;t see much sense in a frantic half a day in Berlin. Berlin is a city that requires a minimum of three days. Rostock, where the ship ports, is much more appropriate for a day-trip.

However, I know that many tourists who come with the cruise ships want to go to Berlin. The cruise is also sometimes marketed as saying that Rostock is Berlin%26#39;s port. Which is a scandal and I hope someone would punish the cruise liners for this lie. If you see lightening striking the marketing manager of your ship, don%26#39;t be surprise, just start to believe in me. It could be done:

(1) Renting a car in Rostock port and and taking it to Berlin - 10 people could use two rented cars - you can see explanations about the way on Google Maps or ViaMichelin

(2) Train, as mentioned before. go to www.bahn.de and write, in the departure Warnemuende and in arrival Alexanderplatz or Zoologischer Garten (the latter for the KuDamm).

(3) Hiring your own transfer including a driver, you can find such services by googling [%26quot;Warnemuende OR rostock%26quot; Berlin chauffeur ] or something similar. There are a few companies offering things like that, e.g.:

I agree with the comments about the inadvisability of taking a day-trip to Berlin from Warnemuende.

Even if you go by train, you have to make some allowances for the return train being late. The cruise ship won%26#39;t wait for you!

Rostock, Luebeck, the spas along the coast near Rostock are all better destnations for a day than the dash to Berlin and back.

We took a train from Warnemuende (the boats usually dock real close to the RR station) to Rostock and on to Luebeck. Had enough time to do some sightseeing in this old (rebuilt!) city of the Hanseatic league, had a good lunch and afternoon coffee with the famous Luebeck Marzipan pastry. Got back to the boat in time for dinner.

For Rostsoc, Luebeck, etc. train schedules check www.bahn.de
