Advice: what to see in 5 days on Romantic Road and Salzburg

My husband and I are traveling to Germany and Austria at the beginning of May. We have 5 days reserved for the Romantic Road (we will be flying into Frankfurt)and then will take the train to Salzburg for two nights and then on to Vienna. What is the best mode of transportation to see the Road in the five days. I want to see Rothenburg and the Ludwig%26#39;s castles. What other towns are noteworthy and how much time should we plan at each? Should I pick one or two homebases and split up our time this way using a car, or would a bus be easier and waste less time? THank you so much for your help. I have been spinning my wheels and don%26#39;t have any friends who have traveled to this part of Germany.

As mentioned in many other earlier reports, the %26quot;Romatic Highway/Romantische Strasse%26quot; (Check it in the Search Feature) is really a regular German highway, connecting some nice old towns and cities. The most famous towns among them are Rothenburg and, at its southern ternminus, Fuessen. Others are Bad Mergentheim, Creglingen, Weikersheim, Dinkelsbuehl,Noerdingen etc.

Allowing for your time constraints, I suggest you take the train from the Frankfurt airport to Wuerzburg; perhaps spend the first night and next day there, visiting the Residenz palace in town, and the Festung Marienberg castle overlooking this pretty and nicely located university city.

Then, take the train to Rothenburg and spend a couple of nights there; continue by train to Fuessen (Ludwig%26#39;s castles), via Munich. Spend a couple of nights there.

Then you have a choice: Take the bus to nearby Reutte and the train to Innsbruck. It is supposed to be a very scenic ride. I have never taken it, but perhaps %26quot;abalada%26quot; who often comments on this board can help you. From Innsbruck, take the train to Salzburg.

The other option is to take the train from Fuessen back to Munich and on to Salzburg.

Theoretically, you can use the Bayernkarte discouted ticket from Wzbg. to Rothenburg, from Riothenburg to Fuessen and from Fuessen to Munich and Salzburg. But for the Rothenburg to Fuessen section I would use a different ticket because with the Bayernkarte you are limited to slower trains. This is no problem for the relatively short trips of Fuessen to Munich, and Munich to Salzburg.

Thank you for the advice on the Romantic Road. I will look into the train as an alternative to renting a car.
