%26gt;Is it possible to travel on this route on the ICE train

It is possible but I wouldnt recommend it. The regional train (RE) is much cheaper, not much slower and the ticket allows you to continue on local transport (subway/tram, buses, within Cologne.

%26gt;and if so how much is a return ticket for 4 people.

A mini group day ticket (up to 5 persons) for the entire area is 26 Euro.

%26gt;Also would we get this train from the airport rail station.

There are two train stations in the airport. The terminal station is only served by suburban trains, you would have to change in Dsseldorf main station. The mainline airport station has direct trains to Cologne (RE and IC/ICE trains) but you have to use the skytrain (suspended monorail) from terminal to get there. You have to buy a ticket before entering the skytrain.

There are frequent direct RE trains. Very few direct ICE trains (at odd times) actually.

Single ticket for local public transport (covering the RE trains) is EUR 9,30 (VRS/VRR tariff price level 5). Mini group ticket - as already mentioned before - EUR 26,00. This ticket is good for up to 5 persons and valid

Mo-Fr from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,So from midnight till 3am next day

There are 2 stations at the airport

Dsseldorf Flughafen Terminal and

Dsseldorf Flughafen

Latter is connected by the SkyTrain with the terminal. The SkyTrain counts as local public transport but not as a train (rather like a tram). It is covered by the VRS/VRR local public transport tickets (they cover all local public transport in both cities), but not by a normal train ticket.

Thus when taking an ICE train from the airport station you would have to buy

4 x VRR short hop tickets for the SkyTrain EUR 1,20 = EUR 4,80

4 x single tickets for the ICE EUR 18,00 = EUR 72,00

thus EUR 76,80 together

ICE is so expensive on this route to keep the commuters out of it for this short distance.

Thanks to both Altamiro and Abalada. Your replies are very helpful

In addition to the above two posters:

ICE-train makes sense on the following high-speed routhes where it goes up to 300km/h. Your itinerary should contain one or more of the following

- Cologne %26lt;-%26gt; Frankfurt

- Mannheim %26lt;-%26gt; Stuttgart

- Kassel %26lt;-%26gt; Frankfurt

- Hamburg %26lt;-%26gt; Berlin

- Nuremberg %26lt;-%26gt; Munich

Should I have forgotten a leg would somebody else please add it...
