Fastest Route from Salzburg to Heidelberg

We%26#39;re planning a family visit, but want to do some sightseeing as well. We will take a leisurely approach from Frankfurt 2 days down to Salzburg, spend 2 days there, and then want to get up to Trier in the quickest, easiest way possible. Seems like Heidelberg might make sense as the overnight stop. Does it? What%26#39;s the best route to take (traffic and time-wise)too get to Trier? thanks!

Autobahn A8 from Salzburg via Munich, Ulm and Stuttgart to Karlsruhe, then A5 to Heidelberg. Salzburg to Karlsruhe is going to take you around 4 hours, Karlsruhe to Heidelberg under an hour. Leave Salzburg around 9.30am and you%26#39;ll be at your destinantion before the commute starts again...

From Heidelberg to Trier: The traffic jam free route would be A656 to Mannheim, then A6 (towards Kaiserslautern, Saarbrcken), then turn onto Northbound A62 at Landstuhl to Trier. Travel time: Just under 2 hours!

Thanks so much for the advice. Making choices from the map isn%26#39;t always what it seems and planning is so important so we can enjoy ourselves and not be stressed (with a 5-year-old in tow!). She%26#39;s made the trip and been around Europe twice, but success is directly linked to smart planning!

Going down, I was thinking of leaving Frankfurt and spending a little time and the night in Rothenburg and then the second day - hitting Neuschwanstein before moving on the spend the night in Salzburg. Any tips there?

Thanks.

If you%26#39;d like to stay in a medieval castle from the 12th century, have a look at Burg Katzenstein, www.burgkatzenstein.de . It%26#39;s a little south of Rothenburg and not very far off the A-7 autobahn. They also have medieval dinners.

If you are going to overnight in Heidelberg and want to have a pleasant drive with some nice sights which isn%26#39;t that much longer both time and distance wise, leave the A-8 by Stuttgart and take the A-81 toward Wuerzburg and Heilbronn. Near Heilbronn take Hwy 27 along the Neckar River with its castles, vineyards and pleasant old towns (Bad Wimpfen is particularly nice) to Heidelberg.

In Salzburg stay in the Altstadt for its lovely ambience. We like Hotel Elefant or Blaue Gans. The whole family can split the Salzburg speciality dessert Salzburger Nockerl.

I second Marcopolko on the Nockerln. But please really only get one order for the three of you! ;-)

If you look at a map you%26#39;ll see that A6 is almost prallel to A8, just around 100km North of it. Goeing A6 instead of A8 is a detour - but not a very long one. So if there is an accident or heavy traffic for any other reason on A8 you%26#39;ve got the option of accessing A6 to Heidelberg (actually to Walldorf from where you use A5 for 2 exits to get to Heidelberg) at three points on your ride:

1) From the Munich area: Take A9 towards Nuremberg/Berlin until you get to the intersection with A6 towards Heilbronn/Mannheim

2) from Ulm take A7 towards Kassel/Hannover and at Crailsheim take A6 towards Heilbronn/Mannheim

3) from Stuttgart take A81 towards Wrzburg and from Weinsberger Dreieck (Heilbronn area) take A6 towards Mannheim.

Get famililar with the English language traffic advisory on AFN Europe (www.afneurope.net) and check their traffic news frequently to make sure you make a well educated decision on when to use that detour. It%26#39;s only worth it if there%26#39;s a traffic jam of more than 10km of lenghth on your primary route of using A8 to Karlsruhe and then A5 to Heidelberg.

We are also considering this -- Hedelberg to Salzburg, but wanted to do it by train -- afraid it would take too long. What do you think? looks like about a 5 hour trip -- is that about right?
