Accommodation in Bavaria

Could anyone recommend some authentic accomodation in Bavaria, in Bamberg, Rothenberg, REgensburg etc. I would prefer not to stay at an hotel, and would be looking for accommodation at an inn/pub. Any information would be appreciated.

I don%26#39;t know how %26quot;authentic%26quot; these places are, but www.braugasthoefe.com lists small breweries throughout Germany that serve food and have accomodations. I would consider the one in my wife%26#39;s home village of Ummendorf to be %26quot;authentic%26quot; with excellent beer and food, but it%26#39;s not in Bavaria but nearby in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

The answer to this might be a little confusing. Places that used to call themselves Gasthofs (Inns) might have changed their name to Hotel for foreign tourists. The Hotel zur Gred in Freising did this:

It is still rooms over a good restaurant with the Gasthaus or Gasthof atmosphere that I remember from the 70%26#39;s.

Following the %26quot;rooms over the restaurant%26quot; theme we also like the St. Josef Hotel Restaurant (Gastst?tte) in W��rzburg.

In Rothenburg we liked the Gasthof goldener Greifen. Like the other two, it has good food as well as rooms.

I have stayed at several of the Braugasthoefe that marcopolco mentions, and I always have been very pleased. Decent rooms, and usually excellent restaurants.

any info on bavarian walking routes?

Having looked around for books and info on walking in bavaria I seem to have had little luck. I am hoping to do some walking in the region in May just using a walking guide book/maps stopping off at places on route. Don%26#39;t know if this is a feasible option or if I am simply looking in the wrong places for information. If anyone has some suggestions as to books/websites out there that could assist me I%26#39;d be most grateful.

Most such books are written in German, but of course even without understanding the language you can use their routes. Suitable books and maps are available at bookstores in Germany. You might also want to look into walking tours where your luggage is transported between your hotel stops. I%26#39;m sure the Bavarian tourist office also should be able to assist you.

Go to the tourist offices at the towns where you will be staying. They usually have a %26quot;Wanderkarte%26quot; of the area where they are located. If you can%26#39;t get a map there, go to a local bookstore and ask them for a Wanderkarte of the region. That%26#39;s what the maps are called.

Driving from Frankfurt to Luxembourg

A colleague and I will be driving from Frankfurt to Luxembourg this coming weekend to attend a meeting in Luxumbourg City on Monday. We have heard a lot about the Rhine Valley, and wanted to do some sight seeing on the way. But we are not sure what would be suitable in this cold weather - expected to be rainy and around 8��2��C. Any suggestions?

At the moment weather is very nice : sunny and 15��.

I think it is to early to know the weather for the coming weekend.

If it is sunny , drive trough the Rhine and Mosel yalley to Luxemburg . If not, take the motorway and visit Trier on the way. Trier is the oldest german town and always worth to visit, also in the rain.

You could drive the Rhine river gorge on your outbound journey and the Mosel river valley on your return. Both is perfectly doable.

If you%26#39;d take the freeways between Frankfurt and Luxembourg your total journey time per leg would be 2 1/2 hours. So just tour the river valleys as long as you like and as long as weather is permitting and then just jump over to the freeway and finish off the drive ;-)

Train from Frankfurt Main to Erfurt

We shall be arriving in Frankfurt (Main) from Australia in October and would like to know if we can catch connecting train from the airport to Erfurt. Since we are arriving in the evening, would like to find a budget place to stay the night and leave early in the morning to catch the train. As we have never been to Frankfurt before, we don%26#39;t know the area and would appreciate any advice any one can give to the following:

1) Hotels in/near airport are expensive (even for 1 star rating) - any suggestion where we can get a decent night sleep without having to spend too much.

2) Do we have to book train tkt beforehand to go to Erfurt?

3) Am quite confused, it seemed that the train station for regional travel is near the airport - is that right? If so, how far away from the airport is it?

Any early replies will be appreciated - since some of the booking sites already do not have any accommodation near the airport.

1) October? When exactly. If it%26#39;s during the bookfair you won%26#39;t find a cheap place in/near Frankfurt. Better to proceed to Erfurt or e.g. Fulda (i.e. far enough from Frankfurt for decent prices).

Otherwise there are plenty of hotels next to the main railway station.

2) You can buy on spot. If you want a cheap special you have to buy in advance (earliest 89 days before travel day)

Depends on the person. Jetlag is more of a problem when flying in the opposite direction. Something else if you want to drive by your own.

Best Time of Day to Visit Neuschwanstein?

What is the best time of day to visit Neuschwanstein on a Monday in late June/early July?

I am looking for an optimal time of day based on crowds and any other factors that I have not thought about.

If you buy the timed ticket then you really don%26#39;t need to worry about the crowds at a particular time of day. Just go when your reserved time rolls around.

The best time to visit is when there are the fewest tourists which it will be over run with at that time of year, the first tour of the morning is best because the tourist hordes won%26#39;t all have arrived yet. Consider staying in Hohenschwangau overnight. The Villa Jaegerhaus is a great very small hotel, and you can have close-up views of the lit-up by night castle. Be sure to get a Neuschwanstein view because all rooms have castle views, but some of only also lit-up by night Hohenschwangau. They also have package deals with tickets to the castles included. Click on my name for my review, and another reviewer has also taken some nice pictures. You can then also walk around Neuschwanstein at night or early in the morning for viewing its exterior, and there probably will be very few people around.

If you%26#39;re on a bus tour you have no worries. If you are on your own, you absolutely MUST be there as early as possible. The line-ups are hideous.

I do plan on ordering tickets ahead of time, but am checking whether I should book a morning or afternoon tour.

Ideally, I am looking for smaller crowds, but don%26#39;t know the chances since I am going on a Monday in summer.

We went on Friday, June 29 2007 and pre-booked tickets for 12:15 pm. Being ulta-conservative, we arrived at 10:00 am, only to find relatively small crowds, and were able to get our tickets moved up to the 11:00 am (next English tour).

It did get busier later in the morning, but about this time (before 11:00) was perfect. I%26#39;d recommend going to Mary%26#39;s bridge (short hike up from where the bus drops you off) for an amazing view. The bridge gets crowded when the bus drops off, but wait a few minutes when the crowds head down to the castle, and you%26#39;ll have it all to yourself!
